The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has made more than 20 seasonal recordings since its first one (for broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe and the Pacific on Christmas Day, 1945), but none finer than this one, led by the group's newly appointed music director, Craig Jessop. Featuring lush arrangements by Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, it emphasizes the gentler, more rapturous moods of the holiday, especially in such beautiful settings as Wilberg's of "Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance?" and "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" and Bradford's fantasy on "What Child Is This?" Balancing these are several selections in which the choir's blazing, full-voiced splendor shines forth, including Wilberg's festive arrangements of "Joy to the World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," as well as Bradford's colorful take on "Pat-a-pan." The choir's singing is magnificent. Listen to the way the men lead off "The First Noel" and to how the full chorus builds the piece to a gorgeous climax, or to the virtuosic job the singers do in the "Carol of the Bells" (with its echoes of Rachmaninoff's The Bells). Impressively backed by the Orchestra at Temple Square, this is a disc to treasure, and a tribute to the admirable work being done in Salt Lake City by maestro Jessop--who now seems poised to inherit the mantle of Robert Shaw. I'm not qualified to write a serious critical musical review, I only know what I like and this is perhaps my favorite Christmas CD. A very satisfying collection of not so traditional Christmas music. For anyone who appreciates choral music and needs a break from the traditional sounds of the season over the radio, this is a must. The Telarc label on the album should be encouragement enough, but each selection is either beautiful, appealing, or inspiring.

This was the first album the choir did with Mac Wilburg arranging and it shows. It is so much better than all previous Christmas albums they produced. Prior to this their Christmas music is very traditional, but fairly boring. This album has glorious arrangements in an entirely different class. "Joy to the World" is phenomenal, as is "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing." "The First Noel" and "Angels from the Realms of Glory" are deeply moving and incredibly powerful. This album was produced before the choir started doing albums with soloists, which also gives it a major advantage over later albums. The only soloist-collaboration they've done that's worth owning in its entirety is "Spirit of the Season," which they did with Sissel. Those soloists are usually not as nice to listen to as just the choir. So if you enjoy the choir, and you enjoy beautiful and powerful arrangements of Christmas music that will touch the heart, this is your album! Buy it immediately!

If you like Christmas carols with mixed choral backed by full orchestration, this is a real treat. I have listened to this a hundred times and still really enjoy it. I bought an additional copy for my car. What I like most about this CD is that many of the carols are not so common and yet are so beautiful. Nice composition. Arrangements are fanastic. You won't be disappointed.

Does what is says on the tin ! beautiful music, very Christmassy with some songs you don't always get to hear in the generic radio, iTunes , public house, shop floor transmissions. A very different type of gift also. You do not have to be Mormon to enjoy this. I like a multitude of music, especially across Christmas as it cuts across the divide and brings us closer in contact with other faiths. all of which have a place, same as music - though I am not keen on garage or rap.

I bought this due to both its SACD and Mormon ties (but inadvertedly bought the regular CD version, misleadingly sporting the DSD logo to the upper left... If looking for the SACD, look for the circular SACD logo to the lower left of the cover!)... but this release goes WAY BEYOND either! To Saints in the "know", these are the rich, progressively-minded arrangements that have been gracing recent Christmas devotionals, cut from the same cloth as the "Salt Lake City Olympics" arrangements which appeared on "The Sound of Glory: Battle Hymn of the Republic" release (also available on SACD, and quite worth a listen). While the Mormon Tabernacle Choir have been a traditional Christmas mainstay for over 40 (and perhaps 50) years, with many a Christmas release sporting their name, this one flies above the average MTC release by leaps and bounds! From the boisterously joyous intro of the opening standard, "Joy to the World", it is absolutely evident that much thought and emotion has been put into getting this release together. The discerning ear will notice certain things which can only come from Mormon thought (such as the slightly revised lyrics in Joy to the World), but there is truly something here for anyone who wishes to celebrate Christmas in regal, classical style. Modernistic flourishes (such as the seemingly whole-tone opening and coda to What Child is This?) pop up tastefully and impressively, yet do not overpower the overall performance (nor one's enjoyment of it). At one end of the spectrum, Masters in This Hall is performed so strongly (I hesitate on saying "so manly", but you'll know what I mean when you hear it) that I can almost picture gladiators joyously marching to it, arms swinging, in a video game or movie (and you thought this review would be like the rest ;) ). From the other end, Whence is That Goodly Fragrance? (aka "THAT'S the marvelous piece I heard sung during the devotional whose name eluded me!") is so lush and emotionally rich in its arrangement that the lump in the throat appeared as the track began (and I secretly appreciated there was no now-typical key modulation for the final verse... although the arrangement "threatens" a modulation in its coda. Although I bought the wrong edition (again, the audio CD instead of the Hybrid SACD), I have ONLY JOY about choosing this title as a Christmas selection. The Hybrid SACD has already been ordered, and this copy will either make a fine gift, a donation to the local Branch or a second copy for the car!
