One day I was reading a comment that someone left on Twitter, which talked about how awesome the Morning Glories series is. I decided to give it a try and ordered this trade. I opened the package, and again noted the "girlishness" of the cover art, and prepared myself for the horrific world of book reports, makeup and Justin Bieber.
I read through ("devoured" is probably a better term) the book in a day. It was that good, people.
This comic is somewhat violent at times, definately dark, but provides the right amount of sweet innocence and flavor so as to balance out the more grim premises which underly the storyline. The art is incredible, and the writing is such as to suck you in to the world of the comic.
Would I recommend this to children? No way. This is definately not a story that you will want to read to your kids. But if you love original comics with unique storylines, great art, and sarcastic humor, then this is definately the comic for you.
Happy reading!
The actual drawings inside are OK, but are thousands light years away from the cover art level. Well, that's OK since 2 different artists did them.
The paper quality is great too, you're gonna love it.
But the story itself...
While we have interesting characters to watch, the plot isn't good enough to get really hooked.
This first volume doesn't reveal many secrets, it does make you want to know what happens next BUT I literally hated the supernatural stuff going on.
Could they just do without it? We've seen enough of such mysteries already. I'd like them to have REAL mysteries, not that unnatural (even silly!) and far from being creepy stuff.
Don't believe anyone who says this comic is scary. It IS interesting enough to keep reading, but not scary and not in any way a masterpiece.
Although I have pre-ordered volume 2, I'm still in doubts whether to stay with these characters in the future.
Everyone says it but its so true: this series is the runaways meets lost.
it's beyond perfection, and I find myself doubting everything around me and everyone I know, in a good way. In a way that means this series is so amazing you end up doubting your own life- basically something only the greatest stories are capable of doing.
I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who will listen to me, and even some people who won't.
You will not regret getting entangled in the web that is Morning Glory Academy.

I mean, I know you're not supposed to judge a comics series by its first number, or six issues as in this case, but this one's not my cup of tea.
First we're introduced to the six protagonists of this series. And it's pretty clear that the more main characters you have, the more difficult it is not to get lost in that many personalities. Counting on the fact that the author is able to actually create six different personalities. Two plates for each one of them, moving from New York to Chicago to Tokyo. Some of them seem normal, some of them are on their way to become full-fledged psychos.
For an unknown reason they're all accepted into this very new and very renown prep school, which turns out to be a sort of hell. The school personnel is downright creepy and probably as psychopath as the students and they do torture the students: physical torture or mental torture it doesn't matter. They're not choosy. All they want is to break down their students because... No one knows.
The faculty liaison is a psycho who actually loves hurting people. The other people at the school, well they comply with her to please and headmaster that no one has seen yet.
Six issues into the story and no one knows what is happening or why is happening. And at the end of the book there's a mysterious flashback which shows what will happen with one of the character. Just to add some more mystery to the plot...
One of the other reviews mentions Lost and I can see the similarities between the two series. I gave up on Lost somewhere along season two, and I'm giving up on Morning Glories Academy as well.
It's why I enjoy reading ' Chew Volume 1: Tasters Choice ' as daft and screwball as that series is. Like 'Chew' the artwork is great but the thing that steals it for me (and again where 'Chew' succeeds) is in the narrative but more specifically the script. Fanboys gush about Buffy and Terry Pratchett's 'humour' but for me those 'funny' scripts are forced and totally unbelievable whereas the script in this flows naturally and is smart and succinct enough to be amusing and funny.
Already ordered Volume 2 and am expecting greater things...I would strongly recommend reading this!
