Luke and Simon run Luke's father's ranch. They've been at it for 10 years now since they graduated college together. Luke had met Simon when they were assigned the same room in the dorm in their freshman year, and they've been a committed couple ever since. Since the ranch is in Texas, and their town is rather small, with matching small-town morals, they don't hide their homosexuality, but they don't flaunt it either. No holding hands in public or any other type of display of affection. Everything has been going along fine for 10 years now, and while they're not harmonious with everyone in their community, they did strike a peaceful balance.
Until the new preacher comes to the church.
Convincing his parish that the two men are tools of the devil, Luke and Simon are stunned when suddenly it seems as if the entire town has turned on them. Even family friends who helped raise Luke won't let him shop in their stores anymore. There's sabotage and assaults and attacks on their herd, and soon Luke and Simon wonder if they should be leaving.
Characterization is very good, and the various characters are given unique personalities. The plot keeps progressing at a nice pace, and the drama is intermingled with healthy doses of sexual intimacy. These two men really do love each other and are turned on by each other, and they show it to each other quite a few times. There's suspenseful stretches, and some surprises too. It's a fulfilling tale that feels unique and compelling. I easily recommend it as a very nicely-written erotic drama.
The two protagonists, Simon and Luke, are more than stereotypical macho cowboys who have nothing on their minds other than keeping each other satisfied. For 10 years, they've done it, almost out in the open enough so that the whole ranch, and most of the town, know it, until the good Reverend and his bad wife come along to practically ruin everything. (This is Texas, remember). That neither of them had the courage, or even idea, of confronting those two hung with me throughout the book.
But I went on and on, and in the end enjoyed it, but was hesitant about reading the sequels because the MCs emerged from this book, and I did not particularly like them. Instead I went to Book 3.5, Luke's Present, which returned to these essentially sex obsessed men with enough "flashback" information so I didn't have to read numbers 2 & 3. Luke's Present is spectacular and I even gave it five stars.
Biggest complaint? Why in the world do publishers only clearly show the face of one of the MC's on the covers? I think the man in the background is Simon, but Luke is the owner of the ranch--why not show his face as well? Grrrrr. Advice: Get this one, determine yourself it you want to go on to the second and third, but finish this and get Luke's Present as well.
