Editorial Reviews
Review
"If you’re after something kind of cerebral and meditative for the middle of the night (which, this time of year, could be 7:00 pm), Stefany Anne Golberg’s memoir-cum-philosophy book is here for you. Golberg grew up in a hard family situation outside Las Vegas, where she decided to separate herself from the world by staying up all night. My Morningless Mornings explores the concept of being awake, ideas about psychology and art, and what happens at 3:00 am. It’s a short and meandering read perfect for the dark hours." ―Sarah Neilson, Electric Literature

I read this story during days 37-39 of self-isolation during the pandemic of 2020. I read this story in the early stages of treatment for cancer. I read this story with a 15-year-old son who does not speak to me and who is weathering all this news not only in his own silence, but in strange new hours that he is keeping, where he goes to sleep around 4am and wakes up just a little before noon. I read this story as a life-long "morning person," as someone who loves to get up while it is still dark and celebrates the world returning to light.
That is to say, I read this story as someone who has not had a perilous relation to mornings. And as I read the author's experiences, I was invited into a new world. This new world helped me understand what my son might be experiencing (something deeply precious to a mother) and gave me some insight into what we are all facing right now as we navigate this pandemic and what a return to the world might look like when our stay-at-home order is lifted -- an easy parallel to many of the themes that arise in the later chapters of Twilight and Sunrise.
This book is a story, but it is one wrapped in philosophical musings. I'm sure it's not for everyone. But that being said, I found it valuable and I will be thinking of it as I move through the times I am now facing.
This book has the opposite message. I thought I knew something of Golberg's vision, having read many of her essays, but this revealing memoir instead reveals a human being whose view of the world is wholly unique. I suppose she and I must have something in common, but I don't know what that might be.
I can't find the quote, but I could swear that Kafka (who of course shows up in this book) said that one can know another most fully by his gaze. This book is all about the author's gaze. More than that, it turns its gaze upon the gaze of others: painters, philosophers, explorers, poets, and more. "My Morningless Morning" is a jumping-off place into other ways of seeing and knowing.
I wrote a memoir when I retired, but it turned into just a lot of stories about weird adventures I had growing up in those weird decades of the 60's and 70's. This book is a real window into the vivid world view of a fellow human on this planet and her journey through time and light, and what has animated her journey.
