About the Author

Michel Lauricella was trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (National Higher Institute of Fine Arts) of Paris. He has been teaching morphology for over twenty years, first at the Émile Cohl school (Lyons), then at the Beaux-Arts studios of the city of Paris, and finally at the Gobelins (Paris). He currently teaches at the LISAA school, the Beaux-Arts workshops, and the Fabrica 114 studio, all of which are located in Paris, France.

This is the first book on musculature I've found genuinely useful in over 30 years. Lauricella's drawings are clear and easy to understand because of his consistency and ability to convey volume accurately. Most books on figure drawing are looser and more rudimentary. The Morpho series is knocking my socks off and filling in gaps in my knowledge of how certain muscle groups fit together. The affordable price and pocketable size are major bonuses. I'm probably going to end up buying this whole series. So impressed.

I’m really happy I took the plunge and bought this book. In different art circles that worship guide books everyone is so quick to pull out Loomis or Bridgeman. They may be fantastic artists, but Morpho is in depth in a way that artists understand. I don’t want to draw an idealized form from 60 years ago, I want to know how things really work. It’s refreshing and very helpful to see poc figures included so well. I’ve become a fan.
What to expect from this book:
The artist goes into great detail (at most times he can be verbose, but more is better than less when explanation is involved) in how the muscles wrap, flex, contract, and shift under the skin.
The book is separated into different categories of the body, like : veins, torso, trunk, upper and lower arms, etc. there are so many good references.
The binding is very cool too. (The binding is exposed so it lays flat on the table)

It speaks as a book made by an artist for an artist.

Very clear and detailed illustrations, made studying anatomy a lot less of a challenge. I will say it is not for the novice artist, I would say it would be for an experienced artist looking to expand their skillset.

I have mixed feelings about the way the book itself was bound, it lets the book lay completely flat so it is easy to reference while drawing, but it makes a horrible creaking sound. I’m sensitive to sound so it’s probably only a me problem, but I felt it was worth noting.

Great muscle reference. I have bigger better more comprehensive anatomy books but I love the size of this series— so I end up using them more. You can just open the ones you want or take those with you and they open flat. Really detailed clean pictures that are easy to understand. Not much rendering in the drawings but the line art is excellent for references.

This book on muscled bodies was the exact same size and shape of the other book which didn't seem to be very detailed, considering it was covering the entire body. I learned a few things from Muscled Bodies, but it seemed to rely a lot on a couple of body types and some common bodybuilder poses.
