Editorial Reviews
Review
“Yaccarino highlights the power of kindness and daring to go against the grain in the story of a small, dapper mole who doesn’t fit in with his larger, burlier brothers...Yaccarino’s crisp, retro graphics exude energy and humor while emphasizing the rewards that can come with trusting one’s instincts.” -- Publishers Weekly
“Yaccarino’s digital illustrations are bold and graphic, and they do an excellent job of contrasting the under- and aboveground worlds that Morris Mole traverses in his adventure of individuality and community.” -- Kirkus Reviews
“The effective use of backgrounds…helps to signal key setting details for young listeners. A gentle reminder that thinking differently can have its rewards.” -- Booklist

There was one thing I did think was worth mentioning though. On one page of the story Morris does face a moral dilemma of sorts, in that he finds himself in a situation where he has to lie in order to protect someone. Within the context of the story I don't think anyone could say Morris made the wrong decision (in fact he shows how good his character is by protecting someone who would not have protected him). Most kids may glide right past and not even give the lie aspect a second thought. But others might pick up on it, which could lead to a discussion on whether lies are ever appropriate, and what constitutes as appropriate/inappropriate.May make for a trickier discussion with a younger age group. But again, maybe I'm seeing something as an adult that most kids won't even consider in the story. And I also suppose it depends on your point of view whether it is a positive, or a negative to open up a discussion about this type of lie. I just did think it was worth noting.
I certainly don't want my inclusion of this to detract from the book in any way, as I did enjoy the book, and will gladly include it on my shelf to be pulled off and read anytime.
The illustrations in the story are outstanding and only improved upon by the positive message of believing in oneself and trying something new. As Morris says, “I may be small, but I can do big things.” What a great message for kids!
