Editorial Reviews
About the Author
With almost a thousand positive reviews and several #1 best sellers in their category, Joseph Duncan is one of the most highly acclaimed indie authors on Amazon.com. Born and raised in Southern Illinois, Joseph worked as a landscaper, a comic book artist and owned his own business for ten years before trying his hand at writing. His first novel, The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All, was a surprising hit, and allowed Joseph to become a full time author. He has since produced 13 more novels and several short stories, many of which regularly inhabit the best seller charts on Amazon.com. Joseph was offered a publishing contract but turned it down, preferring instead to work independently. His horror and fantasy novels have been favorably compared to the fiction of genre masters like Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Anne Rice, and are often praised for their lush descriptions, interesting wordplay and originality. Though some readers have found his works challenging due to their subversive content and explicit violence and sexuality, Joseph has been a perennial best seller since his debut in 2010. If you'd like to contact Mr. Duncan, you may do so at cobraebooks@gmail.com. You can also "friend" him on Facebook, or visit his (sporadically updated) blog Red Ramblings.

This book was great! I’ve read many, many zombie books and this is now in my top 3. Very well written with excellent character development. I loved the Archons and normally this type of thing would turn me off, but the twist in the end was fascinating! Great detail throughout, I could picture the scene and each character easily in my mind as I read. I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I didn’t expect such a well written book. Thank you for the great read!

I've read alot of horror books as of late. Especially from Mr Duncan and his books on "The Oldest Living Vampire" series I enjoyed that series so much, I thought I'd give this book a shot. I'm not a fan of zombies as I've seen too many of this genre in movies and TV. I was sceptical, but I have to say I thought it was great! Once I started reading it, I found I couldn't put it down. It's a great read. I can hardly wait to read another. Great work again Mr. Duncan.

I've become addicted to zombie apocalypse novels and I've read more than the recommended daily allowance lately. To be quite honest, after you've read one, you've read them all....except for "Mort". Really, most zombie novels follow the same general path...a few chapters of character introduction as you meet who will be the band of survivors, then a good chunk of the book is their trek to supposed safety, a big battle, a few mindless deaths along the way, some gore and then somewhat of an anti-climatic end when the characters finally accept the world they knew is gone and you get a brief description of how they've settled into making a new existence for themselves somewhere. The stories vary in length, how they get there and the characters' names. Mort is all that, plus some. It's got humor, some seemingly oddly placed sex scenes and raunch, but it's written in such a way that you can't put it down and you genuinely want to know what's going to happen to Mort and his buddies and you want answers as to who and what the so-called 'angels' are that start swooping in. It's told in a fast-paced, sometimes non-chronological order that keeps it interesting. (in the midst of some action, the next chapter will be a backdrop story that explains how the characters got there or a back story of someone involved, so it keeps you informed of who's who, makes you care about what happens to them, and does a bit of edging for the main excitement you're itching to get back to).
It's a raunchy, entertaining zombie novel with a twist. Sorry, no spoilers here. You just have to read it. It's worth it.

I'm fairly new to the genre of zombie novels specifically, but I have been enjoying post-apocalyptic lit for quite some time now. Mort was a great find. It has some of the same characteristics that all zombie/end times pieces have (the struggles of survivors, the banding together/violence of humanity) but it also has some very unique story elements. The book, halfway through, goes in a completely different direction than one would think, especially based on the onset of the novel. It is a pleasing twist, though, even though it is fairly easy to grasp. The characters, though some are only briefly introduced, are believable and make you want to know what is going to happen to them, which is especially important in a zombie book.
The book is very colorful with language and descriptions, which doesn't bother me one bit and actually adds to the story in my opinion. It helps display the harsh realities and desperate, sharp emotions of those involved. I bring this up because not everyone is going to enjoy it. There are some tense subjects here and if you have any history of abuse or neglect then this book could possibly be triggering for you.
All in all, it was a great story at an exceptional price and I recommend it to anyone searching for a gritty look at the zombie apocalypse, with a bit of wry humor and fantasy elements woven into the mix.

This is not your typical zombie novel. The hero of the story is a self-deprecating anti-hero. He is a smart kinda nerdy guy that is overweight. Also in the story, there are these supernatural beings called Archons that swoop in and save people from the zombies. I loved this book! The writing was really good. I lost myself in the story, and I really rooted for Mort. There is a part in the book (I'm trying not to say too much that will give it away) that completely shocked me. There is a part that goes very, very dark psychologically that might be uncomfortable to read if someone has abuse issues. I found it an extremely uncomfortable part to read, and I do not have any abuse issues.
I loved the ending of this story! I loved the premise! I loved how well this story was written! The only thing I am upset about is that I am finished! I want more! The story had some elements that I have seen before, but it was overall a pretty original take on a story that has been told alot. It takes something really different to surprise me because I have read just about everything, but this book was a pleasant surprise!

Rod redux - i'm addicted!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 14, 2012Verified Purchase
Well, I am now officially addicted to this mans work. I have read most of his books now, Just reading the 'oldest living vampire in love' which I waited painstakingly for. Thought I would try Mort (not normally into zombie books). Well again another winner for me and totally addictive to the point of couldn't put it down. The character Mort is very likeable and thoroughly enjoyed the book. I have imagined the characters, described so beautifully. Come on Rod write some more, not sure if there is a sequel (need to look) but it would be great!!!! critics may whine about typos, This is not a problem for me - all his books flow, easy to read, nothing complicated and the main point is you cannot put his books down.

There's only one way to put this... AWESOME!!!
Rod has done it again. The journey of Mort Lesser and Pete Bolin is very realistic. Interesting turnout. Love the unfolding of this story.
More please, Rod. More!

I bought it as it was cheap and I really enjoyed it. I would love to read a sequel but don't think one is planned?

I downloaded this book ages ago but only got round to reading it the other day. I wasn't holding out much hope for it but I'm loving it. Looking forward to the sequel.
