I’m assuming you’re familiar with the some of the stories surrounding King Arthur and his knights. This is, of course, only one version, but one of the later ones, and rightly considered among the best (although the older High Book of the Grail is perhaps more interesting).
What’s remarkable about this book is for sixteen bucks you get an illustrated, well-bound volume that looks nice on the shelf and is a pleasure to hold in your hands. (I have no idea what the one reviewer was talking about concerning nudity in the illustrations. There just isn’t any.)
Before Kindle, before trade paperbacks, people had the pleasure of books like this.
This is not the version popular in Victorian times with the unsavory bits cut out, either. The Grail cycle is not an exemplar of sacramental marriage, for example. This is Christianity painted over an older culture and the chapel is never far from the Faerie. That complicated, dreamlike quality has fascinated people for centuries.
Wonderful edition of a classic story of adventure, mystery, enchantment and strange tragic fates.

This is a defective printing. Chapters 21-24 are missing out of the book, so the publisher just printing them loose leaf, in a different font and format, and tucked them into the back of the book. Other reviewers have noted this so it is clearly a known defect and should not be sold.

I love Le Morte D'arthur, But I was sorely disappointed when this book arrived! I purchased this book to use as a clue in an escape room. Approximately every 3-5 pages contained images of naked men, and women, and half naked female satyrs, sorcerers, and angels. Almost all of the naked images were unrelated to the text, the actual images used to tell the story, were frequently lovely, But then they just filled the rest of the book with repeated images (often the same) of off topic nudity. I do not mind tasteful, or even topical nudity in art work, but this was neither and it made the book unusable for an escape room geared to high school students. Come on guys! Do better!

This book is gorgeous! You feel like your stepping into medieval times when reading it. The script can be a bit hard to make out at times, but it add to the whole beauty of it. The illustrations are stunning to look at also! The font is about 7 point or 8 so know that before buying. It comes with a nice black ribbon marker and sturdy slipcase. Definitely designed for Arthur fans.

I had heard about this book since I was a child, I am now 77 years old, and was never in the position to purchase it until recently. I have always been fascinated with the myth of King Arthur due to history classes in school and afterwards by reading and watching movies about him. Working on my family tree and delving into the past on my maternal, English, side I have found much history. Ancestors such as Kings Henry I, II, III, King John I, some Scotish kings, French kings, Spanish kings and Portuguese kings, William the Conqueror, Charlemagne, and many other nobility So far it has been worth the wait to obtain the book, it is slow reading due to the use of Olde English, hahahaha. Yes I am enjoying the book very much. I want to thank you for the fast delivery to me.

I was looking for a Father's Day gift, and I stumbled across this book in a search. For an Arthurian Tales aficionado, he loved it and has taken it with him to read on vacation. I was so impressed, that I purchased a second copy for myself.
The cover art is beautiful and the gilded pages give it a very kingly feel. The book as a nice weight when reading, and the text is clear and easy to read. The pages are crisp. The images are sharp and provide a nice occasional focus for your imagination.
I have not encountered any printing problems.

Lovely volume with cloth cover that its a joy to hold. Reading it is like going to an art museum. I needed it for school and I invested in a purchase rather than a rental because I knew I would treasure this book and I have no regrets. The only problem, and it's my problem, is that the print is so tiny that even after Lasik I need magnification to read.

if you are looking just to read the story casually the abridged versions might be better suited .

overall it is enjoyable if you are a fan of the arthurian legend and want to know more about the knights/damsels in more detail (it has good character development, could be complicated) . the phrases can get abit repetitive especially in the battle scenes (limited style). the vocabulary is elegant and gives you a feeling of actually being in the legend itself. i personally loved it and read it along with 'sir gawain and the green knight'

Beautiful and well made
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 20, 2020Verified Purchase
This book is absolutely stunning. The book is very well made and the quality of the paper is good. They feature illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley which it says in the introduction that the was a late Victorian artist and this was his first commissioned works he did. The introduction talks about the early history of king Arthur and Celtic folklore when the Roman Empire left as the empire fell which lead to the dark ages with any history documents being written which leads to the myth of King Authur.
The book is split into twenty one books with small chapters which makes it easier for me to read as I can not read for a long period of time. It also has a page marker where you can save your place in the book and it is blue and soft to touch. I really like this book as it looks like a meadevil manuscript and on the spine it has those ridges to give it a magical look. The cover is really well designed as the back as well with gold guilding. I am not sure if it is real gold leaf as I am not a expert on that but it gives it character. The title "Le Morte d'Arthur" is a shorted from the original title "The whole book of King Arthur and his noble knights of the round table" if you are just wondering why it is in French. As is say again a well made book and stands out on my bookshelf and I hope on yours it would do too.

Beutifully bound and presented hard backed volume in substantial illustrated slip case.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2019Verified Purchase
This is a beautifully presented edition of this ancient text. It was published in 2017, based on the first printing by Caxton in of1485 and subsequent early and late19th century revisions. It is copiously illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. The binding seems of very good quality. The cover is of black and gold fabric, again with Beardsley graphics. The slip case is of Heavy duty card and again illustrated in black, gold and off white with Beardsley graphics and some embossing. The whole package has the feel of late Victorian Arts and Crafts style and love of medievalism. I make no comment on the text itself. If you are interested in Arthurian legend, this is as close to the source as you are likely to get; the source being William Caxton's print. There have been some edits, mostly in terms of modernising some of the 15th century spellings in accordance with Victorian practice.

Missing books!

I bought this as a reference but it's missing the vital books I needed - so no Lancelot and Guinevere and no Death of Arthur. It finishes after Tristram's book. Very disappointing!

Hard Going - but pays off it if you can put in the time!

lovely edition, nice hardback, gold pages, lovely pictures spread throughout the book, written in full 'olde worlde' text. starting off with a negative:
the 'olde worlde' text is rather dense and difficult to read - unless you are an expert olde worlde text you will, at times, have to re-read and guess the meaning of certain passages. it's not impossible, but it just takes effort. some words i just have to gloss over, and generally go for the rough impression.
however, that said - once you accept this approach, then the book begins to open up and share its secrets, and you begin to be rewarded. perhaps my initial mistake was to begin at page 1, and try to read chronologically through (as i would normally) but that hasn't worked for me. instead, i am now occaisioanlly taking the book, chosing a random 'book' (there are nearly 800 pages containing 21 books, and simply reading one particular thread out of many. and i am finding that i like it very much. probably this book will take me a couple of years to read, as i dip in and dip out. but i think its worthwhile as i begin to uncover the secrets of King Arthur and the world(e) of the Knights of the Round Table.

Good book with limited illustrations
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 15, 2020Verified Purchase
As other reviewers have noted this is a beautifully presented book. However, be warned that if you are seeking Aubrey Beardsley's 'illustrations and ornaments' this volume has none of the chapter headings and little of the feel of the Dent original. Good for Mallory but the jury is out on the Beardsley
