Disappointing
Based on the reviews, I guess I expected something with a little more substance. The story was kind of cute at best and the illustrations were fine, but the ending was just weird. I must say, I was very surprised that this story has so many 5 star reviews. I’m obviously the odd one out.The story is about a mouse that keeps kicking all the figurines out of the stable (from the nativity scene the humans have set out) and stealing the manger from the baby Jesus because he wants it for his home. He realizes his mistake when he hears the humans telling the story of the first Christmas and feels bad about what he has been doing. After giving the manger and stable back, he prays for a better home for himself so he doesn’t have to go back to his dark creepy hole. Suddenly, he finds a ginger bread house and moves in, thinking that God has answered and that all of his troubles are finally over.Even a little child understands that a gingerbread house is extremely temporary so it sends kind of a weird message to them about the way God answers prayers in my opinion.

I’m a sucker for children’s Christmas books that have a strong Christian or true-meaning-of-Christmas theme. I’m also a sucker for lovely illustrations. And this book checks off everything on the list. The illustrations are vibrant and clear, and depict lots of well known Christmas images. The little mouse Mortimer is relatable to small children - being tiny in a house that’s built for someone much larger than yourself, searching for something just right for you. Mortimer doesn’t like his dark, dingy hole in the wall so he goes in search of something more warm and cozy. He comes across the nativity and decides to make his home there. But one night he learns who the home belongs to, and what he does will be a surprise to the tiny reader. The book came in perfect condition and my child has now asked to bring it to school to share with his class. If you like this book you’ll also love Room for a a Little One.
