Kaffe Fassett, an accomplished painter and designer of textiles, is widely acknowledged as a visionary in the use of color. In 1988 he was the first living textile designer to be given a one-person show at the V&A in London, where he lives. He is a fabric designer for Rowan Patchwork and Quilting and the primary knitwear designer for Rowan Yarns.

Kaffe Fasset always lends a wild, whimsical, almost overpoweringly colorful touch to whatever craft he turns his mighty skills to, and this book is no exception. I have recently purchased 3 other books on making mosaic designs (both how-to and inspiration), and this is by far the best.
The content of the step-by-step instructions is adequate; it contains the necessary information on materials and how-to, and covers the territory at least as well as any I've seen. Where this book absolutely dazzles, though, is in its visual inspiration. Fasset and his co-author for this book, Candace Bahouth, will blow your senses with their incredibly colorful designs, as well as the examples of historic mosaicwork of note; you will come away from this book certain that you too can create brightly wild flights of fancy with a few broken bits of crockery and some cement adhesive. And in fact, maybe you can! I warn you, though, fantastic design and color sense doesn't necessarily fall into your lap as effortlessly at it seems. If not, it won't be due to any lack on the part of this book to spark your ideas!
This is a book to come back to again and again; in fact, it's altogether too much to take in all at once! I find myself having to get up in the middle of the night to look at it yet again, as I lie awake picturing all the splendid things I could make...if only I could find such colorful bits of broken china and sparkling glass...

Don't get me wrong. The 3-star rating I am giving to this publication has nothing to do with the contents of the book: the text, instructions, and photographs are wonderfully representative of the talent of the two great artists who wrote it. The photos are beautiful, and instructions are clear and easy to follow. A must-have for artists who like to create out of the beaten path.

The reason I am giving this publication only three stars is because of its very poor binding, that started falling apart right after the first reading. Also, this soft cover edition published in the US is the exact same book as its counterpart published in hard cover in the UK under the title "Mosaics, Inspirations and 34 Original Projects", with a different cover. There is no reference in the US edition to the original UK edition, which is regrettable, as many buyers looking for books on the subject might be trapped into buying the two publications, believing that they carry different contents. I was.

Anyone looking for this book would be better advised to buy the UK edition, in hard cover--maybe more expensive, but much more durable. For more on the subject, please refer to my review of the UK edition of "Mosaics".

I LOVE this book. It's gorgeous with high-quality pages, and of course the content is phenomenal. Sadly, though, the cover comes off the book--suddenly, and all the way off--a couple of days or so after the book arrives and is taken out of the box. I've never seen such a thing before or since!
Amazon.com promptly replaced my first copy of this book, but alas! The second copy did the same thing. Whatever glue was used to attach the cover to the book, has not done its job!
For many months I had planned to order this book and was delighted to finally do so and receive it. Now, though, the disappointment is huge. I don't want to be without the book, but if I return this one also, would copy number 3 have the same defect?

I love the explosion of colors that Kaffe uses, both in mosiacs and quilts . This book has a ton of brightly colored mosiac pictures in it...lots of interesting ideas...fairly good instructional pictures but all in all , I didn't like it and returned it . There was only one project (the broken pottery flower pot) that I would have even considered doing and it, too , was just to busy looking for what I was interested in doing. If you love the color explosion that always come with Kaffe projects then this book is for you. If you prefer something a little toned down , or a little structured, then this book is not for you. Hope this helps someone decide!

I purchased this because I have a killer knitting book by Kaffe and I wasn't disappointed! This is visual yumminess!
