I read Moscow Bound over a period of 4 days and evenings. I didn't want to put it down. I especially liked the building of tension all the way through the story with one event setting the stage for the next. The descriptions--locations, how long it would take to get from one crisis to the next by car, and problems such as parking or cars that would not start because of the cold--grounded the reader. Relief from tension was provided by mention of similarities between the situation and things familiar to the reader--Columbo, Law & Order, and tennis quotes. Throughout the story, the reader experienced the changes that occurred in two men--Pravda, a Russian, and Mitchell, an Englishman--as each struggled to do what he thought was right. The ending left the reader wanting more.

It was interesting how Adrian showed his protagonists slowly grasp the surprise outcome, then come to grips with it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Highly recommended!

I was on a home bound flight from London to Moscow recently, when I saw a man reading a book called Moscow Bound. What a coincidence! Of course I wanted the book. After a whole month of waiting for it to be delivered I eventually got it. The wait was really worth it. From the first pages the author manages to create the scenery and the characters so vividly live that you practically can see them. The deep understanding of Russian psyche and Moscow geographical settings allows the author make a strong impression that he knows the subject from the inside out. The story itself is so unusual that it captivates you from the very beginning, but when the main twist happens towards the end it makes you jump with excitement and wonder if the author himself was a spy or still is? I never read a single spy story and now am very grateful to Adrian Churchward that he has ignited a burning interest in me for a political thriller. Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

Everybody in the story was bad except 'the English' character

The story plot is too predictable since it is a thriller. The mixing of many different people and nations was interesting but the way the story was told was too English. Everybody in the story was bad except 'the English' character. Even in fiction, Communism and Soviet Russia was slammed, current Russia was slammed, Vietnam slammed even US slammed except England. The great democratic country of England.
The story plot is too basic and predictable. The character development is too weak, in connection with reality the story was too vague and too out of touch of reality.
For young people it can be fun to read this but i recommend to watch movies rather than read this. If you are going to spend your precious time to read, please read something that will teach you something or help you grow as a person. This book was not so bad.

Over-all, a Good Story

I’ve been struggling to try to write this review and try to properly express my views on the book, because my opinion is rather conflicted.

This was not a bad book. The writing is competent, and there was a fairly steady feeling of suspense through out. Our author did well with the history and the setting, to really give you that picture and keep both your interest and your intrigue. So, this story hit the marks of plot, setting, and intrigue.

What fell apart for me was in the character development. One aspect of reading is, to me, getting into the characters and caring about them. I never really felt like I felt enough for the main characters in this book, particularly the one who was our main figure: Scott. But I didn’t hook much into Ekaterina, or Pravda. (Although I did more for Pravda than the other two.)

I never really felt like I got to know Scott that well, and I didn’t feel his motivations as strongly as I felt like I needed to in order to understand why he did the things he did. Ekaterina was too enigmatic for me to hook entirely into her, and in being so, Scott’s reactions to her just didn’t make as much sense to me. And sometimes characters that were supposed to be worldly felt rather…naive and foolish.

There was one point where I just wanted to shout at each and every one of them about how no one even conceived of a particular fact. I don’t want to give it away here, but I came up with the theory almost instantly because I know that people can make things up. No one in the book even conceived of it, and their “but it’s all” explanations in not doing so felt thin.

Otherwise, there were some things that felt like there weren’t properly explained, and did make some sections a bit confusing. If I’d been better connected to the characters, however, this probably wouldn’t have been as much of an issue.

So, this is why this review has been so hard to write. A lack of character connection is a big issue for me, but I felt much of the rest, so… 3.5 Fireballs on this one. I also now see that this is the first book in a trilogy, and I’m curious enough that I may check out the rest.

This is a deeply, well-plotted espionage novel which more than matches any other I have read in a long time. The story is convoluted and one has to concentrate to follow the problems which beset the hero, Scott Mitchell, a British Human Rights Lawyer living in Moscow.
The author, Adrian Churchward, clearly has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Moscow and things Russian. We get furtive insights into the internal conflicts between the various Russian Intelligence Services and glimpses of the distorted world in which they play out their venomous activities; these are mixed in with the power and ruthless anarchy of the oligarchs. The pace of the story builds up as does the suspense.
Scott Mitchell’s adventures are labyrinthine and compelling: just the combination to make this a very exciting thriller which, once you start it, you cannot put down.

I found a lot to like about this story. It had pace - I was pleased to know how much time had passed between episodes. The banter was credible and often funny without seeming contrived. There were occasional touches that brought the characters, especially Scott, to life, like when he registered that he felt too young to have ear hair. And I really liked the fact that there was no steamy affair with the Russian beauty. How many readers would have bet on that in the early pages?
Were there negatives? Reading the book in a number of sittings, I got a little rusty on the acronyms of the various Russian security and policing services. I could have done with a glossary or more reminders of how they relate. Given the specific descriptions of different locations, maybe a map of Moscow would have taken me there more graphically. Lastly, I could see some readers finding it useful to see a timeline of developments
from the Cold War through to the modern era.

Moscow Bound is an absolute thriller of a novel set in modern day Russia, though mainly Moscow, that allows the reader to discover a city and it’s country well off the beaten track – whether that be geographically, politically, psychologically, nationalistically or demographically speaking. In this novel it is all five blended into a page-turning thriller that absorbs to the final page…and postscript.

Evidently the writer knows this country and it’s people intimately from the Soviet era through to the Russia as we know it (or don’t know it) of today. The main character, an English lawyer from the East End of London, manages to sue for crimes against humanity the Russian military in a human rights case at the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of Chechens abused during occupation of their territory. But equally, perpetrators of that genocidal abuse, as well as another equally disarming scenario involving the American government make their way into this initially lost and found story that morphs into a hunter and prey adventure of international reverberations and proportions that demand further abuse of power. This is an ultimate multi-level chess game involving the military, intelligence, police, mafia, government and ordinary people.

For some, the Russian names may be a challenge, but really make the entire storyline so real. Added to recent events involving high level Russian involvement over the past couple of years – whether murder, indictments, international conflicts - this novel’s release is perfectly timed as it interweaves a web of intrigue, drama and adventure that not only tests human resourcefulness of it’s characters (good and bad), but gives a really rare and interesting insight into the Russian psyche at various levels of social status.

It is not necessary to give the story away – it is a simple and exhilarating read. I suggest just buy it, read it and enjoy…

Rich plot line, easy read and one mighty twist you won't expect

Finished the book in two sittings and thoroughly enjoyed the Friday night in doing so.

The main setting is modern day Russia, with the spectre of communism haunting the corridors of power. The Russian secret service, whilst fighting amongst itself, is investigating a prominent British lawyer, who is running his own investigation against the Russian state and against the clock. As the two approach a common point, a secret of such tantamount importance risks exposure that all bets are off... and it will be the last man standing.

Finished the final chapter with a smile, many questions and have found myself thinking about it a few days since.

Aimed at those who enjoy an easy read with a cunning plot, fast pace and growing suspense. The author achieves the fine balance of realism, historical fact and entertaining story line.
