The first book of the Mossy Creek series. A small southern town filled with people who know everybody else's business.

This is a nice cozy type of story. It is a feel good type of book. Don't expect a lot of conflict. It isn't a quick read and will be a good book that will last you quite a while.

Each chapter of the book is about a different person living in Mossy Creek. The first chapter didn't really capture me. That took until the second chapter. I just wasn't a big fan of Ida. But the other characters were wonderful. So if the first chapter doesn't grab your attention give another Mossy Creekite a chance, they may have a better connection to you.

The reason why I took off a star for this book was because of the ending. It leaves you hanging more than I like. You have to buy the second book to get the answer of the town's big mystery. They didn't need to do that. I would have bought the next book anyway just because I enjoyed the town and it's people so much I would like to learn more about them.

I found this book to be interesting because when I began reading it, I thought it would be a combined anthology of stories that all fed off of one another and created a book as a whole that flowed together. Instead, I felt the writing was really good and the stories alone were pretty solid, but as for combining them, they would not make much sense. When the book is titled with one single title and all of the stories must conform to fit under that one title, I just felt they should have connected together easier. I struggled with giving this book a three or four star and eventually decided on four, as it was a fine example of writing, even if it was a little confusing. I think if you are to pick up this book knowing that the stories do not link together like connect the dots, then you will most likely enjoy this book.

I give kudos to the incredibly talented writers as well as their detail-oriented editor for keeping everybody's lives straight in Mossy Creek. This book starts with Ida Hamilton Walker as a little girl. I started reading it, thinking it would largely be about her. While she was one of the main characters, the writers did a beautiful job of introducing the other residents of Mossy Creek & the surrounding towns chapter by chapter. Each life seems seamlessly woven into the next and the next until you have this beautiful tapestry; giving you a complete picture of the southern mountain town. I fell in love with each character almost instantly, laughed out loud several times & felt like I shared in their sadness as if I had transformed into a resident of Mossy Creek myself.

I have also read Reunion at Mossy Creek and thought it to be consistent with this book. There is an introduction of even more characters, satisfying follow-ups on the characters originally introduced and a great mystery all wrapped into one book. I can't wait to read the next one in this series, Summer in Mossy Creek.

I truly enjoyed this book. The premise is that of a Mossy Creek woman corresponding with a British relative who is trying to uncover the stories behind her American relatives. Mossy Creek is a small town where everyone bands together against the rival town, Bigelow. Talk about a feud! Each chapter tells the story of a different set of characters through the point of view of one Mossy Creekite. The characters and stories we are told are thoroughly engaging. However, keeping this from being a 5 star review, is the fact that what strings the stories together is very weak, and at times really a stretch. This was the part that could be totally discarded, leaving the reader to read only the stories without the "connectors".

The stories are humorous, touching, outlandish, and real. If you don't believe me, read them for yourself. I think you'll come back and agree!

This is one of many free books I've picked up on my Kindle, although it's no longer free.

This one, like many of them, is the first in a series. The idea is to hook you in so you'll buy the others. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't.

For me, this one dose of Mossy Creek is enough. They're pleasant enough, the people of Mossy Creek, but quickly forgettable, and with so many truly great books out there, why spend money on a series I know to be middling?

If you enjoy the small town, "everyone knows your business" kind of atmosphere in a book, this one may be just your speed. The revolving cast of characters will either make your head spin or keep you fully engaged with Mossy Creek. I enjoyed the book, and wouldn't have been upset to pay $7 for it, but I won't be picking up the sequels.

Charming Small-Town Tales

This book reminded me a little of the Mitford series, full of vignettes of small-town life, not really about too much of anything and yet charming and sweet. One difference is that in this book, each chapter was a separate story profiling a different character in the town. The stories did build on each other, layering different elements of the town, presenting a variety of facets until a rich tapestry is completed of Mossy Creek. Since there is some overlap of characters, you learn more about some of the characters in later chapters. It's an easy read, but entertaining and relaxing.

If you enjoy books about small town Southern life or about small towns and their quirky residents, this is for you! It's written by a number of writers and very well done. The multiple authors lovingly create a small Southern town that is an absolute delight and their writing is generous to their characters, even the most quirky of them.

It's a quick, enjoyable read that will make you laugh and cry. While you'll hate to see it end, don't worry, there are a series of Mossy Creek books. I've got the next one on my Wish List Reunion at Mossy Creek
