I absolutely loved reading this book. I enjoyed how the author picked the top ten couples from the bible, ran through their situation, showed how each person in the relationship played a part in their story and then showed how each story may relate to and help other married couples.
Not only do I think this is an excellent book for couples to read together, it is also a book for singles; especially singles who are hoping, searching, courting or waiting for God to send them a mate.
I have to admit that while reading the bible, not every one of these married stories intrigued or even interested me, however, after reading this book and the context in which the stories are presented, I found something interesting in each.
These stories only reiterate to those who ask God to send them a mate but think they can change things or flip the script once they do, that without following God's plan there are sure to be problems. It also further supports the roles that husbands and wives have in their marriage. At the end of each story, the author has included an exercise for couples that can help them get to know each other better and become closer.
One of my favorite chapters in the book is Chapter 8, "Don't Get a Divorce Unless You Have a Good Reason." In today's times, with an increase love of power and money, the influx of social media and the need for everyone to know, divorce is looked upon in the same way the loss of thirty pounds is; a great accomplishment. No one wants to work at relationships anymore and at the first sign of a disagreement or hurt feelings, couples are ready to split.Read more ›
While the perfect biblical marriage illustration comes from Jesus Christ and His bride, the Church, that one example isn't used at all. So, expect a lot of mistakes, rudeness, abuse, bullying, etc. from the 10 chosen couples, reaching from Adam & Eve, Abraham & Sarah, Isaac & Rebecca, Jacob & Rachel & Leah up to Joseph & Mariah. Others could have beend included with ease, e.g. Job & his wife, Elkana & Penina & Hannah. Human characters you can relate to and learn from. A great deal is spent on the Song of Songs, in which Clarke assumes King Solomon & his first wife, Shulamite to be the nearly perfect couple, having good conversations, foreplay and intercourses, plus a few misses and distractions as well. The 999 other women in the King's Castle are kept out of this book.
Clarke writes with lots of humor and personal illustrations as well, carefully carving out the real intimate details. He's radical on divorce, sin and forgiveness. Be prepared. If you didn't get any pre-marriage education in your church, this is a great book to dive into. And if you have been married for some time, it's a good set of biblical marriage lessons as well to treasure your threefold convenant.
A previous reviewer noted how the relationship of Jesus Christ and the Church isn't included. That is so, but I believe the purpose behind why their relationship doesn't have a chapter of its own is because that relationship is discussed throughout all 66 books of the Bible.Read more ›

This is a very good book, with great reading and understanding, I believe any couple will benefit from it, but it has to be read by both parties for it to work.Published 7 months ago by Natasha S.
This is a great book! Very conversational writing style. I'm doing this book with a group of young moms, and we all enjoy reading and discussing each "couple" as a group. Read morePublished 10 months ago by Ben
