Each drive lays out a series of destinations in order, along with recommending little stops and side trips along the way. The thing is, it's easy to go on Google and find the quickest way to get from place to place, but it is hard to figure out the BEST way to get there. I use this book to start planning trips, then go back to it once I've determined destinations in order to figure out my specific route and make sure I haven't missed any in-between stops. I tend to use just pieces of their overall suggestions, but they are great starting points.
My only criticism is that all the maps are by state or by region, sometimes so zoomed in that you can't really figure out how one route relates in time or distance to other routes. I desperately wish they had included a map of the whole country with all the routes so I could judge how much distance was between different suggested routes. More than once I've found myself Googling random cities to see if there is any overlap or possibility to combine routes, only to discover that they are several hours apart.
The problem with this kindle edition is they have mixed some states in their central states region map and content and in the eastern states map and content resulting that all those roads in those states have mixed numbers that do not coincide with the roads description:
The states that show repeated in both regions are:
IN, OH, KY, TN, MS, AL and MS. All of those have wrong roads description numbers and you can not find the road trip by the number, sometimes you can just not find it at all. You will have to spent an incredible amount of time figuring out which on it is making it unusable. When you are busy on the road you will not have the time to figure those things out. I did not have the time to check the rest of the book to see if there are more errors or try more regions. I had to return it.
Hopefully this gets fixed by the editors because this book is expensive compared with similar great books like the "National Geographic guide to Scenic Highways and Byways": I have that too and is greatly useful with no errors.
My comparison is based on a purchased copy of the enhanced version, and a sample copy of the Kindle version. The comparison is based on using the Kindle app on an iPad Pro.
Before the purchase, I saw the specs for the two books differed, but without being a Kindle connoisseur, I did not know how these differences would impact the use of the books. The notable features included in the Kindle but not the enhanced versions are: Word Wise, Screen Reader, Page Flip, and Enhanced Typesetting. The only unique feature mentioned on the enhanced version was Audio and Video.
A free sample was not available for the enhanced version, but it appears that it can be returned within 7 days, so I proceeded with the purchase. What follows is the differences I noticed between the versions.
Table of Contents
The enhanced version has a table of contents, the Kindle version does not. There are pages within the Kindle version that have the contents for the four sections of the country, but those pages are located in each section of the book rather than in the front/menu bar.
Pagination
With the iPad in landscape mode, the enhanced version displays 2 pages side by side, the Kindle version fills the page width with a single page. In portrait mode, both versions display a single page across. The photos show the difference in landscape mode.
Scrolling
The kindle version allows continuous scrolling of pages. The enhanced version forces you to scroll one page at a time.
Video and Audio
I found a few videos in a quick skim of the book. One video showed Old Faithful in action, with a narration that was about as useful as the caption on a still picture. The videos are a nice touch, and are a slight improvement over just stills. I did not find any stand alone audio content as the title alludes to. All audio was with the videos.
Summary
The book overall is great. I purchased the ebook, after I have made many trips with photocopied pages from the original printed version. I think I am going to stick with enhanced version. The added table of contents makes all the difference, and the videos are a nice touch. I will miss a few of the kindle features like continuous scrolling and page flip, but I think it is worth giving them up for the TOC.
