Product Description
MOST WANTED - Blu-ray - In the late '80s, low-end dealer Daniel Léger (Antoine-Olivier Pilon) proved the perfect patsy for the Canadian cops to involve in an overseas drug sting-and he'd wind up looking at the death penalty while incarcerated in Thailand's most notorious prison. His stunning odyssey, as well as the laser-focused efforts of investigative reporter Victor Malarek (Josh Hartnett) to shed light on his plight, are presented in this riveting fact-based tale. 135 minutes

The movie portrays a true to life story of a Canadian that is very hard reality. "Most Wanted" concerns the illegal drug trade between people and foreign countries, international law, and law enforcement. But it's not the US law enforcement that is corrupt to the bone, but the Canadian government. The hero or the antihero, depending how you experience him, is in peril. He is stripped of resources and misinterpreted. The worst circumstance puts in motion an incredibly horrific experience for him; he steals a package of cigarettes from a gas station. The inept and sloppy Canadian police mix his identity with that of a Canadian criminal same last French Canadian name. That man had robbed a gas station and was convicted of his robbery. The center by which the drama spins, is the character which Jim Gaffigan plays. That character is the most evil, despicable, dangerous, thief and fraudster a movie has ever depicted - He is almost unwatchable. Gaffigan's wonderful YouTube videos he created from his apartment(s) in NYC helped me get through the lock down during the beginning of the pandemic. He is a wonderful person who never uses foul language - but in this film, he is a complete inverse of his real self.
"Most wanted" is unlike many drug war movies with an antihero/hero police or criminal. After watching "Most wanted", I've revised my opinion about criminality for the possession of heroine leading to years in jail. "Most wanted" has several stories that develop concurrently and intersect, which is not easy to accomplish.
It is very French in spirit - or references many French films involving internal strife and external chaos in society, with many timelines rearranged. And in the French tradition, it's main character asks a woman (his mother) for money, is rejected, and steals something minor leading to a disaster. French is spoken in this film. There are subtitles for the few times that happens. Lastly, and most superficially, though most of the drama takes place in Canada, and for the most part, I believe all of the actors are Canadian, none had a detectable accent. It was difficult to fix on the Canadian aspects of its corruption.
Many true crime movies move slowly or just have cheesy dialogue. That's not the case here. The story is well-written and worth the watch if you're a true crime story fan.
Main plot of this "Based on True Events" story is a poor sucker junkie gets ensnared in what is basically one of the most ludicrous cases of Entrapment in history - or at least in Canadian History. This kid is just looking to get high, and the Jim Gaffigan character convinces him to fly to Thailand to score ten kilos of "H" as they so uncooly call it. This, all financed and supported by the Canuck version of the DEA, masterminded on the Government side by a rail-thin, specter of an agent, played by Stephen McHattie (who all of you X Files fans will recognize).
If it sounds implausible, it probably is, because the notes at the end confusingly indicate that maybe this all happened, maybe it didn't. Mainly, because apparently the Canadian Government has sought for years to suppress the truth. Except, the film was financed, in part, by Provencal bucks from the Government of Quebec. Oh, right, Quebec has been trying to secede from Canada for decades.
OK, back to the film. Everything here is pretty effective, pretty well-written and well-acted. Only problem is the time shift narrative only becomes apparent about a third of the way through, when you realize that you are watching a retrospective of historical events, and a current timeline of our pitiful junk getting ready to rot in a horrible Thai prison.
You'll have to watch to find out what really happens.
Not only was the movie well done (except for the into score), I was very impressed by the caliber of courage, and fortitude, of both the victim and his rescuer. I didn't like that the young man imprisoned in Thailand attributed his help to Zen Buddhism, but then again -- I had to go through my bout of that false teaching, too. I believe Sidhartha would have believed in Jesus Christ had he known about Him, anyway. But, by far, the most impressive character was the journalist. Victor's integrity and courage reminded me of the Vernon Johns story.
