Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 - In this retelling of a Mexican folktale, cautious Mother Fox worries about the safety of her three babies, for Don Coyote is about, perennially thin and slavering after tender youngsters. On the night of the children's first hunt, however, she forgets her vigilance, lost in laughter over their comic attempts to catch frogs. Trapped by the coyote, Mother Fox uses all of her wits to convince him that the reflected moon is, in fact, a wheel of cheese sunk in the pond. Buying the story hook, line, and sinker, Don Coyote drinks the pond dry and is then too waterlogged to give chase as the fox family escapes. The illustrations, showing round, primitive animals in a moon-washed landscape, are enhanced by a scratchboard technique and have considerable charm and atmosphere. However, the overly long narrative is a bit plodding both in English and Spanish and may not hold readers' attention. Lois Ehlert's Moon Rope/Un lazo a la luna (Harcourt, 1992) is a better Latin-American variant on this theme.
