Mother Hunger: How Adult Daughters Can Understand and Heal from Lost Nurturance, Protection, and Guidance
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships.
Does this sound painfully familiar?
Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors - and are unable to stop.
Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact. In doing so, she destigmatizes the shame that comes with being under-mothered and misdiagnosed. McDaniel offers a healing path with powerful tools that include therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes in service to healthy relationships.
The constant search for mother love can be a lifelong emotional burden, but healing begins with knowing and naming what we are missing. McDaniel is the first clinician to identify Mother Hunger, which demystifies the search for love and provides the compass that each woman needs to end the struggle with achy, lonely emptiness, and come home to herself.

This book wasn't always easy to read because it brought up buried memories and emotions. Some parts were tough, but they helped me recognize and make sense of the deep longing I've felt inside, which the book calls "mother hunger."
One of the things I liked most about "Mother Hunger" is how the author shares her own personal story while also giving insights from psychology and research. She made it easy to understand. The author's honesty and caring way of writing made me feel safe exploring my own feelings and experiences.
"Mother Hunger" is not just a book about problems; it's also a book about finding solutions and ways to heal. Reading this book gave me hope that healing is possible.
I think "Mother Hunger" is an important book for anyone who wants to understand more about how the relationship with our mothers can affect us emotionally. Whether you've felt mother hunger yourself or you want to support someone who has, this book has valuable insights and advice. It shows us that we're not alone in our struggles and that there are ways to heal and grow.
"Mother Hunger" has had a big impact on me. It helped me understand myself better and gave me hope for healing. I'm grateful to Kelly McDaniel for writing this book and sharing her story. I think it can make a difference in the lives of many women.
My family . Any woman can relate and it’s easy to read and right on !

The notion that we carry a painful yearning due to our attachment wounds - especially those related to our mothers - feels intuitive… but I’ve not seen it laid out like this before. The author provides a real framework for personal archaeology and detective work. But she also named my pain, and I thank her for that.
The only thing that stops me giving it five stars is the cultural critique. Patriarchy becomes a bit of a totem for the challenging elements of society that contribute to mother hunger. I feel this could have been unpacked more and I was left wondering about capitalism and consumerism and the roles they play too. I was left wondering about modern working practices for example.
A side note is that the book did come smelling of perfume (?) , Not sure why but it is quite an overpowering smell I try to ignore when reading it!?
I guess you only buy this book if you have unresolved trauma/issues in your life, so dealing with the emotional pain whilst working through it is inevitable.
I’m now only on page 50, because for me it’s tough going in the sense that I really need to process the content - but it is very deep and completely cathartic, so much so that I have bought a copy for my sister and also recommended it to my best friend.
Also, I know the authors intent with this book is not to use it for relationships with your daughter, but I just can’t help but reflect on those too and it is making me view things in a different light in that relationship too - so the benefit in my case is two-fold.
I can highly recommend this book, but don’t expect it to be an easy read, but I know already that this book is changing my life for the better.
