This is more than a travel book (albeit a great one). It's a story of a "mad" "English" "hippie" who has created an envious life for herself and graciously shares it with us. Now I can begin the waiting for what comes next, or perhaps, before!
She fixes up (what sounds like) a lost-cause cottage in the Auvergne, with the usual problems with handymen. Yet she must have a charm of her own, because the French people she comes into contact with sound mostly like pleasant, reasonable and reliable people. Of course the fact that she speaks French must help a lot!
I liked her never-give-up attitude, and her willingness to entertain a few visitors and ferry them around in what sounded like a rather iffy vehicle. I would urge people of 55+ who believe they're over the hill and should do nothing more than knit something for a grandchild, to read this book and realise life does not stop just because you get older!
Thanks Tottie -- a very good read. I haven't read your other books, and hope to get round to them.
