Review by Sandy Penny, SweetMysteryBooks.com
Professional Women are being brutally raped and murdered, and their only connection is a Professional Dating Site. The police are having no luck solving the crime, so Allie and Jeremy Branson, a husband and wife investigative team, are called in, due to their high success rate. They quickly eliminate and track down the suspect, and then things go awry.
This is the first of the collaborative series between Mike Wells and Robert Rand. Although it is much more graphic than Mike Wells' usual style, it's a good story with plenty of suspense and action. It includes several graphically brutal sex scenes.
I look forward to more stories involving Allie and Jeremy Branson, a husband and wife investigative team. I felt their character development was a little thin. I have always liked how Mike Wells goes in-depth into his characters, and we feel like we know them well. In this book, we are kept pretty much on the surface of the two main heroes. If we are to care about the protagonists, we need to know them better.
The character of the villains are better developed, and totally unlikable, as they should be. Too much graphic sexual violence for my taste. It lacks the psychological sophistication Mike Wells usually exhibits.
The story does have an interesting twist, and I won't spoil that. But, I don't understand why the convicted suspect didn't mount a greater protest on his own behalf when facing a death sentence, and I don't think that is made clear. Still, it was a compelling read and sets the stage for more possible books with this investigative couple. Good job, guys.
I’ve listened to and enjoyed several of Mike Wells’ audioboooks so I was looking forward to reading this book, which is a different genre from the others of his that I have read.
I have always liked a good mystery and With Mother’s Approval didn’t disappoint. It was a bit graphic and made me squeamish at times (I’m not complaining but I thought I’d share that for those who might get more than squeamish).
The characters are interesting. I didn’t like Dano at all, of course, but he was described well. Allie is your typical literary detective who excels at her job. Her husband, Jeremy, is also a good detective but he rubbed me the wrong way. There’s a time and a place for smart remarks and he oversteps those bounds often.
With Mother’s Approval is a good mystery/suspense with a twist or two and I definitely recommend it.
From the first page I was drawn in and within 48 hours completed this novel - a fast read by my standards. Here are some of my notes as I read the novel - I won't give away any spoilers...
- Great varied vocabulary just right for each scene;
- difficult to read gut-wrenching, graphic and harrowing violence and depictions of evil violent crime;
- Made me question my own values and the meaning of 'family';
- Atmospheric and evoked the five senses (and possibly a sixth?);
- Fantastic Courtroom scenes;
- Great informal banter and dialogue between Allie and Jeremy Branson;
- Written with a balance of intelligence and sensitivity;
...just a few of my thoughts.
Readers of a nervous disposition are advised to exercise special discretion and anyone of anything other than a sound psychological state best steer clear altogether for this is a novel that will grab you, spin you around and leave you shocked.
However, fans of Mike Wells' brand of 'unputdownable' thrillers know what to expect and will not be disappointed.
This is far from 'The Drive-by Wife' (another great read by the way) without the truck! Character interactions are brilliant and unbelievably realistic. The clues throughout are cryptic and will leave you kicking yourself when the 'good v evil' scenes unfold to their thrilling climax.
Overall a fantastic, absorbing read that does not disappoint. Another well deserved 5 stars.
Thank you Messrs Wells and Rand!
The only thing I would caution about is if you're not one for specific detailed information, it gets kind of squeamish. But not bad.
And I love all the twists and turns toward the end. Hope to see more of these books.
I have become a huge fan of Mike Wells. And his books are well worth the read. I highly recommend this book if you like fast paced books about murder, wonderful police dedication, and so many twists you can't figure out the end until you read it!
