A Mother's Heartbreak: How Scientology Destroyed My Family Perfect Paperback – May 1, 2018

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

In this gut-wrenching story of anxiety, loss and steadfast love, the author shares her personal struggle to regain her relationship with her children severed by the Disconnection Policy of the church of Scientology.

As she discovered, she is not alone in her sad circumstance. Many other families have fallen victim to the manipulative powers of Scientology and its practices.

In the few brief encounters she had with her kids several years ago, they expressed a mutual deep love for their mom but the organization's relentless hold on its members has clouded their vision of freedom of choice and understanding.

Lori Hodgson's mission for this book is not only a happy reunion with her offspring, but to keep others from going through the same heartbreak.

"When one loses a child through death, I know there is immense grieving and sorrow, but there is a time of fond memories too of the good times and eventually a time of closure. I too have those wonderful memories, but my heart will not release this heavy sorrow because I still have HOPE. The only thing that will bring me closure is to be able to hug my children once again and tell them, IN PERSON, how much I love them. That is my everlasting HOPE."

This book is extremely powerful. It tells the heart-shredding details of a Mother who has been Disconnected from her children because they are within Scientology & she has chosen to be outside Scientology, which is one of the worst actions a member can take. In focused detail Lori leads the reader thru her experiences with Scientology & I emerged from reading this, wiping my eyes alot but grateful & thankful I, Lori & many other unique survivors of Scientology got out & are telling our accounts of the truth buried beneath the intense PR which Scientology uses 24/7. Another great book for my Escaping Scientology bookshelves..Thank you 💛abw

The author does an excellent job of conveying the title of her book, A Mother’s Heartbreak. From the beginning she takes the reader through the reasons she joined Scientology – which many people can’t understand – to her disenchantment with the organization and on to the heartless consequences of her leaving the group: the ‘disconnection’ from her two children. I really felt her frustration and dismay as she related her experiences of trying to get to her children to let them know she loves and respects them and just wants to reestablish their relationship as a family. For anyone who is curious about the power of a cult-like organization, I recommend this book. It’s a fast, interesting read.

A Mother's Heartbreak is a moving chronicle of how a wonderful and courageous mother was first deceived, ensnared, and lied to inducing her to become a new parishioner in the Church of Scientology; then the terrible suspicion after being tricked that the hidden secret scheme of this church was to subversively take her children away into a entire life of ignorance, menial slave labor and debt peonage to the elders, and leaders of the Church of Scientology. Entrapped in Scientology theology, where parishioners give up their rights to free speech, all legal rights given to church "ethics officers", this mother fought CoS clergy for the parental right to have her children, and for them to finish high school, while the clergy betrayed her.

Reading like the Bourne Ultimatum, all the lies and deceptions of this church were suddenly discovered; there is the meeting with the FBI agents investigating CoS slave labor human trafficking in children; the Inside Edition secret travel to meet with her son, Jeremy, seen on national television; being a guest on Nightline and 20/20 to expose the CoS child labor trafficking scheme to parents nationally, and her national radio radio campaign. All while CoS operatives stalked Lori interstate, threatened her with beatings, hacked her cell phone and Facebook page, defamed her to neighbors, the public, and her children in a frantic effort to shut her up, to stop this mother at any cost.

Very interesting story. It keeps you thinking what’s going to happen next. Fortunately I worked with
Lori this year and all I can say is, NO MOTHER SHOULD EVER BE TREATED THIS WAY! She is a fun loving person and the Scientologist people who are controlling and manipulating her adult children should be put in prison or placed in a mental institution. This is America and we are all free to choose whatever we decide to do... regardless of how much money we owe to anyone!

It's so sad what the church of scientology does to its parishioners who were once faithful. If you lose your faith in this church, it's dangerous. You could lose your friends and family. The worst, in my opinion, is to lose your children. This is a very brave mother to hang in there and do everything she can to try and get her kids back. I hope and pray they one day get their heads out of the mindset that would allow them to "disconnect" from her and realize the true value of a mother's love.

A Mother's Heartbreak is a sad, heart wrenching timeline of the horrors visited upon the author by the so called "Church" of Scientology. Stealing away children, forbidding contact with one's child while taking "courses" at Scientology's SeaOrg, intimidating children into signing illegal billion dollar contracts and imposing the cruel practice of family disconnection are all Scientology horrors that Lori chronicled in her book.

While I've never been a part of Scientology, I've witnessed through a close family member the despicable practices forced upon its members. For anyone in Scientology or who has friends/family in this organization (or considering joining Scientology), the book is a must read!

I just finished reading A Mothers Heartbreak by Lori Hodgson. It is unbelievable the length that Lori and her Mother have gone thru to have contact with her children. The public and everyone needs to realize that Lori is living a true nightmare at the control of Scientology, who praises themselves that everything they do is for the greater good. Exposure to what Scientology really is and how they treat people is their biggest fear. The more people that read Lori's story, and expose what Scientology is really all about, not only helps Lori but every other person that has suffered from and continuos to suffer from Scientology Disconection.

I can't even imagine what Lori has endured with the disconnection policy the the "church" of scientology has put on her & her family. Thank goodness she has an amazing support group. This story is moving, chilling, & downright appalling. Keep up the fight Lori & the truth will reveal itself in the end.
