For much of my life I was the skeptic, actually more like the cynic, believing happiness happened to a few lucky people. I was unhappy but concluded it was because life dealt me a bad hand. If only things had been different. Over the course of several decades, I studied many self-help, religious, scientific and business books along with quite a number of research journals. None of them cut to the essence of solving this pervasive problem quicker and better than "Motivate This!" In a very clear and humorous way, Steve Rizzo details the answer to much of our misery and, from the recent happiness research, improves much of our poor performance, production, and profits at work. He states what seems obvious - Happiness is OUR choice and we will be happy when we shift our focus. While that sounds overly simplistic for a complicated issue, it makes sense and, better yet, it works. I know because I tried it and found it works every time.
Here is a sneak peek at his formula - We will be happier and far more productive when we SHIFT our thinking which will change what we believe about the situation and help us feel better, developing a can-do attitude that motivates us to take the difference making action.
Notice the progression: Shift- Thinking-Belief-Feel-Attitude-Action.
But make no mistake; this is no magic wand. The shifting process will require effort and challenge your excuses and how you tell your life story. It will challenge how you see the world, what you believe, feel and what attitude you hold. But the result is definitely worth that challenge.
In the end, this book is a difference maker - if you choose to make it one. It is fun to read, easy to understand yet has a powerful impact. No wonder it is on my "go to shelf" with tabs and highlighting for easy reference. It is now one of the first books I recommend in my disruptive leader training. It is a game changer. It is that powerful.
I love Steve Rizzo’s writing style. Just like his other books, it’s as if he’s sipping a cup of java while conversing with you across the kitchen table. He injects plenty of humor and he adds his own personal background at times which tells me he is speaking from experience, not just some rehashed self-help mumbo-jumbo.
I couldn’t have read this book at a better time. I’ve been going through a dark, heavy season for the past couple of years and while I have practiced some of the strategies Steve delivers, there was much more to learn. “Motivate This!” is a book that makes you stop, think and search your soul if you will. It challenges you to "peek" behind your own curtain and make better decisions based on not only who you want to be but better yet, who you were created to be. Talk about motivation . . .
Steve writes about negative emotions, toxic belief systems and self-curse talk which when focused on squelches any motivation you might be able to muster up. Steve understands people and knows himself how to get and stay motivated. By approaching the method he lays out, it cuts through all of the disapproval you feel. One of the strategies he zones in on is to be thankful for the blessings we all have even when we think there’s nothing to be thankful for. When we are connected spiritually, we allow ourselves to rely on God-confidence, not self-confidence which brings a center of peace, calmness and quiets the soul. This is the kick-off in renewing the mind so you’re well equipped to get and stay motivated for the long term.
There is so much meat in this book it was hard to put down. He partners common sense - success strategies with spirit, mind and soul for a compelling, thought provoking way to achieve success in any area.
“Motivate This” has heart, is highly inspirational and an absolute read for young and old alike.
