I'm not sure what my opinion of Beth was... She seemed cold and distant from the beginning of the book until the end. Granted, had my husband dropped a bomb shell on me like Jake had with her, I probably would've had the same reaction, but it felt like she was truly not happy with him from jump. I'd like to read about his kidnapping in the Philippines. Seeing what happened to him might have helped fill in those gaps. Edited to add -- I see now that there is a book before this one, but I didn't know that. The books aren't properly labeled to let someone know of this, so I missed the first book.
All in all, it kept me reading and kept me wondering what was going to happen. I even doubted Jake, thinking he really did do the murder and was just in denial or didn't remember it. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt with a convenient ending that was somewhat disappointing... Also, I found some typos and misused or missing words in various places, which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars.
I got the book for free - I'm not sure I'd spend full price, but still, a fast paced read that keeps you guessing.
In this book, Jake has a knack for self-sabotage, clearly demonstrated in his thought process and analysis of the situation. Afraid to expose the truth about a horrific incident that had happened to him while kidnapped, Jake tries to protect his bruised ego by avoiding details. He hides the truth from his family and employer, and soon travels down a long path of lies. The web he weaves, as he chooses mistake after mistake, leads him to more twisted possibilities, until an unexpected development comes along. Everything you thought would unfold changes, and he again comes up with another lie to tell the police.
Entertaining as you follow alongside Jake—sometimes wanting to shake him to stop the lies and other times worry alongside him. This is an engaging story, well written with a strong voice. While most would never do what the main character did, you could imagine yourself there as he faces the consequences. The scenes were vivid, the characters unique, the situation very unusual. A great book to read if you enjoy a noir.
It was an enjoyable read and would make a great beach book!
