It's worth the price, I guess, but I wanted to be more excited about this phone.

First, the good. The fingerprint reader is excellent—fast, and accurate. Voice recognition works well from a decent distance. The phone is really responsive and snappy. The ability to add an SD Card is helpful (though not what I expected, see below). I'm sure it's a personal thing, but I quite like the front speaker quality. The 16MP selfie cam is great. The Amazon ads are no big deal—you barely notice—and definitely worth the discount. WiFi reception is great.

Second, the "meh". The screen contrast is a bit low, so everything is just a tad washed out. The rear cameras are satisfactory, but the quality and two-lens effects aren't amazing. The Moto interface additions (gestures, voice, etc.) are interesting, but I don't see them adding so much value as to be worth the additional complexity. Amazon Alexa is included, but a pared down Moto version that doesn't allow for an alternate wake word or joining multi-room music groups, etc. Cellular reception (data and voice) is so-so—head to head testing against my wife's Nexus 6 shows the X4 to be noticeably behind. This is somewhat made up for with WiFi calling on T-Mobile.

And last, the bad. The phone has 32GB internal storage, but 15GB are used by the system out of the box. After updating the factory apps (nothing else added) internal memory is at 17.7GB. That didn't leave me nearly as much room to operate as I was hoping for. As for the SD Card, it can only be used for media and photos (no apps/cache/app data). This is apparently a function of Nougat not allowing adoptable storage when file-based encryption is enabled, and encryption is enabled by default on this phone. So it's really closer, operationally, to a 16GB phone than what I had expected from a 32GB.

I'm going to keep the phone, it's worth the money to me (with the Amazon discount). I'm not delighted, though, and I was hoping I would be.

Great premium-feeling phone for a very modest price with Wi-Fi calling

After we purchased Moto Z Play for my husband and loved it, I have been waiting for this phone to come out for a while because I personally wasn't able to find a decent competition for this price. Like many sensible people, I was just not going to shell out $800-$1000 for a phone.
This phone has not disappointed me in any way so far -- it runs really smooth, the battery life is great for my usage and the cameras are good for my purposes.
I've noticed some other reviewers complaining about Wi-Fi calling and I can tell you that this phone DOES have Wi-Fi calling capability which has been working for me like a charm (I have very poor cell reception inside my house). I do have T-Mobile currently, which, obviously, supports Wi-Fi calling for this particular phone. So, if you are not able to get Wi-Fi calling to work on your phone, it is very likely the carrier issue.
As far as Amazon ads go, they are way less intrusive than I expected. Honestly, they are barely there -- a small notification bar on your lock screen (same size as you get for a message or an email) a couple of times a day; AND that ads bar can be swiped away the same way as any other notification. So, for $70 off retail that is really nothing.

The only disappointing thing is very poor selection of cases and screen protectors for this phone on the market at the present moment, which, I'm sure, will improve soon.

This phone replaced my Nexus 6p. It has a smaller screen truthfully I like that. I went with this phone because I could have Alexa. The battery life if really good Wich is why I had to change phone's. The other thing I was thrilled with is the Google play store is on it. I wish it was on my fire 10.

Not just ads: Alexa capabilities limited to Amazon services

In light of recent events (more below) and after reviewing the response by the Motorola representative below, I actually feel more discouraged about my purchase. At the time of my initial review, I assumed we might eventually see integration for non-Amazon streaming platforms (Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, etc.). After reading the official list of applications, it seems clear that this Alexa app was designed to be a walled garden of exclusively Amazon services (Amazon Music, Audible, etc.).

I don't mind the Amazon ad bloatware, but I didn't realize I would also have to cede some of the freedom and flexibility Android is known for in the process. This may sound overly cynical, but keep in mind, this comes at the same time as support for YouTube has been withdrawn from Fire TV and other Echo devices.

Original review:
I have used this phone since the day of its release. The phone is a solid, budget-friendly, mid-tier Android device, but if you were excited about built-in Alexa capabilities, I'd advise you to look elsewhere. Google Assistant covers all of the functionality and is "baked in" to Android whereas the included Alexa capabilities are not.

The Alexa capability is included via an app called Moto Alexa. This standalone app does not replace or interface with the other Alexa app that you can download to configure your other Alexa or Echo devices from your phone. The voice recognition and speed are fine, but it evidently does not use the same API hooks as other Alexa devices, so it does not have the same suite of capabilities. At the very least, I assumed the Moto Alexa would serve as a replacement Echo remote, but it cannot replicate this functionality AT ALL.

Crucially for my purposes, you are unable to:

-control media playback on other connected Alexa devices in your home (this includes Amazon Fire TV voice controls, for instance)
-begin music playback using Spotify on your phone (or any service other than Amazon Music, as far as I can tell)
-control music playback using non-Amazon services

I would love to be corrected on this by Amazon or Motorola support, but until further updates come through, Google Assistant can do everything Alexa can do on your phone, plus much more, and it's standard on every Android phone.

The phone is slick looking and the price is great with amazon prime discount. I'm having problems learning how to use it because its my first smartphone. It doesn't seem very user friendly and I'm pretty frustrated that I can't get it connected to my WiFi. The user manual can be printed off the internet but its pretty involved. So far the phone is outsmarting me but I'm no quitter. Where do you go for this kind of information from a live person?
