What is an unlocked phone? An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan. |
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier. Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card. Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract. |
How do I set up my unlocked phone? The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination. |

According to the representative it was not a “refurbished” phone. They were just returns. I then had them escalate the case to a US team. After waiting several days for the US team to contact me, ( mind you my battery is already swollen and possibly a fire hazard at this point) the US team tells me the there is NO WAY for me to get a phone replaced with a new one even if it is a defect. Then explains to me that the phone could be a returned phone that is repaired. Which by all definitions means a refurbished product, but by moto’s definition means “ like new” since a part has been replaced. The only concession they made was waiving the $25 fee.
Almost a week after I called in I finally received a replacement phone. The phone was packaged poorly in a generic Moto box. Which was tossed in a soft fedex mailer without and packing. The phone had some tiny blemishes. But the strange things was that the serial numbers labels had been stripped. Leading me to believe that these may be returns/refurbs of the Amazon version of this phone.
All this to say I’d rethink purchasing a Moto phone. Their build quality has been in sharp decline after being sold to Lenovo, and the support is definitely not what it used to be. So be prepared to buy a new phone that will have some sort of issue before even a year has passed.

The first big problem with the Moto g5 plus is that it doesn't have NFC. Translation: There's no simple way to get all your texts, contacts, etc. from your previous Android to your mobile. Yes, if you have a Google account, you can transfer it using Google, but not all my contacts were kept in my gmail (in fact, many important one's weren't). Also, my bookmarks were transferred; I had a LOT of bookmarks, and now I'm going to have to go to the various sites on my phone, and bookmark them again. Now, I knew about the Moto not have NFC before I bought it, but I didn't realize how much WOULDN'T transfer using Google. My bad, and just something to keep in mind if you buy the Moto.
Also---and I admit this is minor----it seems to take more clicks to do something simple than it did on my old phone. For example, if I want to send a text, I put in my contact, but then I have to press the check mark on my keyboard to get to the message box to type my text. Why that extra step? There are a couple of other instances of having to do that extra step, and I can't see the point of it.
Overall, if I had to do it all over again, I would still buy the Moto g5 plus because it's a really good phone for a reasonable price. People who are shopping around need to be aware, though, that the Moto doesn't have all the features that high end phones do.
