I purchased this locking gas cap because I live in a neighborhood where things tend to disappear overnight. I awoke at 2 am one night because I could hear someone outside my window. And wouldn't ya know it, someone was sucking gas out of my tank not 12 feet away. Not only did they take most of the gas but they ripped off the cap for my tank too.
It's just too darned expensive to leave my gas up for grabs so I snapped this up when I saw that it was only 6 bucks. I have had this cap on my car for 3 weeks now and the only time the gas needle moves is when I have been driving my car, which is exactly how I like it. The lock itself is very easy to use and its easy to tell when its not locked properly. When it is locked correctly, the top of the cap spins in place but won't unscrew from the tank. By my estimation, this cap has already paid for itself 3 times over.
Since it has only been a few weeks I will update this post later to let you know how it holds up, or holds out.

Up-date 10/24/2012:
The Gas cap is still going strong. Someone tried to pick the lock to get at the tank the other night. I can see the scratches where they were trying to pry it off. I am glad to report that they did not succeed. I think it's safe to say I am well pleased with the performance.

This is a good locking gas cap for the price. The only problem is it needs instructions with it. One might not think so, but this cap locks differently than any other that I have owned in the last 40 years. This is not necessarily making it a bad thing, just different. Just a 4-inch by 4-inch piece of paper with brief instructions on it.
Remove key, screw in cap clockwise until it clicks, replace key, turn key clockwise until it stops, remove key (Locked). To (unlock) insert key, hold cap, turn key clockwise until it stops, unscrew cap.
I believe the different way this cap locks, and lack of instructions is the reason for many of the bad reviews.

For 2014 Toyota Tundra. I don't write many reviews but I'm compelled to on this one. This cap will not seal when locked. No matter what you do, tighten cap until it clicks 3 times or 50, as soon as you turn the key to lock the cap, it gets loose and will trigger evap. leak Check Engine light. If you mess with it SEVERAL times you might get lucky and it will seal, but that is only until next fill up. I'm a auto technician and know what I'm doing, I've tried this cap now for 3 months and it wont seal almost every time I fill up and that's attempting to get it tight over and over, twist lock check, twist lock check and hope it's tight only to have Check Engine light come on a day later.

Fits perfect on my 2008 Toyota Tundra. This model truck does not have a switch inside the cab to release the fuel door, which makes me nervous. I know that it isn't the most secure thing in the world but it is a deterrent. I would recommend for anyone looking for a locking gas cap. Once locked, the outer portion of the cap just spins freely.

The Amazon fitment guide said this would fit my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado LS, 5.8L V8. It DID screw into the tank opening but after about five minutes of driving, I got a "tighten fuel cap" warning on my truck computer. This cap can only be tightened so tight before it starts to "click." It turns out that my truck has a cap that does not have threads on it like this model has. Look closely at your factory gas cap. If it doesn' have threads and has a geometrical triangle pattern on the side of it, skip this cap. I ended up getting an ACDelco, GT264 cap from Amazon and it works just like the factory cap. The Amazon picture for the GT264 does not show a side view of the cap, but all you have to do is Google the model number and there are hundreds of pictures on the internet. I commend Amazon for their great shipping and return policy. I will NEVER take them for granted. I am a true LIFETIME Amazon customer.

although not listed in the look up, this model will fit a 1994 dodge ram250 van.

to lock:

turn gasoline cap clockwise until resistance is met; then turn the key clockwise and remove.

to unlock:

turn the key counterclockwise until resistance is met; then turn gasoline cap counterclockwise until it comes off.

on my van it fits properly and does not cause the 'check engine' warning to activate and remain lit.

i would not consider build quality of the lock assembly hefty, but acceptable for one who wants to prevent others from accessing the gasoline tank.

Waste of $$$, not even worth the postage to return it. It fit my vehicle at first, but as time passed (approx 1 month) the fuel light came on. No amount of adjusting of the cap worked out. Running a car with a ill fitting gas cap can create all sorts of havoc, so I had to replace this with the original cap. Unfortunate because I really wanted a locking gas cap.

So far, so good! Should have given it 5 stars, but key was hard to insert. I'm pretty sure it will wear in and work fine. I'm going to put some graphite powder in key slot and see what happens. The old one was 13 years old and decided it was time to change it, so why not go with one that locks. I keep thr spare key inside the truck. Need to make another spare because its not a common key type.
