I purchased this box a week ago and received it today.

This is the third top box I've owned, the second like this style, all three were made by different companies. The latch on this box is plastic but many of them are. No surprise there. My 1st box was 6 years old when I sold it and it had this exact same latching system. I had no trouble with it. A steel plate mounts to the bike and the box pops onto this plate. You can push the red button when the key is turned to pop the box off and carry it with you or leave it behind.

I installed it in an hour: Pretty straight forward. Lined up the holes in the front and had to drill for the holes in the back. The mounting plate that gets screwed to the bike is stamped steel with hard rubber feet. Because of this, I used thread locker on the screws and tighten them down just until I saw the metal plate start to flex. Over tightening could bend the plate or pop out the rubber feet. Since I couldn't really torque the screws with a lot of pressure, I used thread locker and snugged them up real nice. Once mounted I popped the box on. The feet on the back of the box push deep into the mounting plate then the front pops down over the latching mechanism. So far it looks like a very secure system. Nice fit. Nice looking box.

The key inserts and works fine. Nothing feels extremely cheap. When latched and locked, the bottom of the latch sits flush with the box making it hard to grab it with your fingers to pry it out. There is a nice lip on the lid used to push the box open after it is unlocked. The box opens past half way and the lid is stopped by a strap. This is nice because the lid stays up until you close it.

Starting with the positives - This Scooter Top Box Tail Trunk is very attractive and is of a very nice (useful) size. Bold reflector panels add to safety. Unfortunately, the locking mechanism relies on a thin plastic hook piece that clips down the trunk top. The fact that the trunk arrived with no mounting instructions was, at first, my only complaint. But after only 3 uses, the locking clip broke off rendering the trunk completely useless. It's now held closed by Duct Tape (Thank God for Duct tape)and will be until we purchase a different one - Disappointing, but what did I expect for this low price? Well not much, but I'd at least hoped I could at least keep it closed without duct tape... let alone lock it - which is now impossible.

The mounting is a bit tricky, particularly if the scooter rack is built too close to the fender for the lipped mount bars provided to fit between, like mine is. Had to figure a work around.

Also the screws came without locking washers that are essential for a mount that is subject to stress and vibration and are a little undersized for the job, I/4 inch bolts and wing nuts would have been nice to have been included, as any scooter deals with varying install requirements. Finally,if the unit had come with basic instructions, and those locking washers, I would have given the item a five star rating.

I am very satisfied with the quality of this trunk. It's the perfect size for storing my modular full helmet when I park so that I don't have to carry it around with me all day, and it doesn't rattle or make noise while I'm riding.
That being said, the nuts and screws that came with the trunk didn't last longer than 2 days and it literally fell off the back of my scooter while I was riding to work. Luckily, it was 7 in the morning and no one was behind me, and I suppose you can compliment the trunk for still functioning perfectly well despite flying off the back of my scooter and getting scratched up a bit. But I'd definitely recommend ditching the screws and nuts that come with the trunk and picking up a pack of 1/4 screws and nuts at your local Home Depot or Lowe's and doubling up on the nuts on all four screws. It was hard to get an exact match to the original screws since they're metric (so said the helpful sales guy at Home Depot) hence the reason I switched out both the screws as well as the nuts.
So, $2.50 later I have my trunk firmly seated on the back of my bike and am very happy with the final result.

APRIL 2ND, 2014 UPDATE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm back on Amazon shopping for a new trunk and saw my review on this one, so I figured I'd add a quick update! The trunk "props" that hold the top of the trunk up fell off in the first few weeks of use, so the hinges that hold the top to the bottom of the trunk were perhaps getting more stress than they should have. That being said, one hinge broke last fall, lasting approximately one year from when I purchased it, then the other hinge broke off last week. So, the box will still lock, but the other side that should be held closed by the hinges is completely broken.
Can't say I'm mad since I think it was only $45 including shipping, but it's time to buy a different case!

This is the 2nd time posting a negative, on Amazon. 1st off, this box it a great little investment for those on a budget.(like me). I mounted the case on my scooter (no instructions) but pretty straight forward. took a ride to work last night (18 miles) I rechecked the case and the mounting's all is good. once home though, the first thing i noticed was the big red reflector on the top side of case was gone. :-( the tabs just sheared off, leaving the screws exposed. I was not a happy camper at all, but it is what it is. so save your money and get the good stuff, as for me, i'll keep this on until i get a new one, i need the trunk space. and as for the big reflector, it's laying on the interstate somewhere.
