Range? Sure as hell not 22 miles. On FRS channel in the clear outdoors with no obstruction got about 3/4 of a mile and that was the end of it.
The only disappointment is that the FCC and FTC continue to permit manufacturers to put absurdly ridiculous distance ranges on these radios in their marketing.
My application calls for less than 1000 foot in any direction and I don't expect any more than that.
One of the other consumer radio brands markets as 35 miles!!
AUGUST 2016 Over 8 months of occasional use. Mostly grand kids aged 5-12. These have held up very well so far. Range has been great for our camping trips. Still don't expect more than a mile but work well.
12/22/16: One thing to note about the belt clip. While it works great as it's very difficult to unclip once it's on a thin material as the u-shaped hook prevents it from falling, the clip itself is a weak point where it attaches to the main body. Just a little snag and the attachment broke off. I know they sell replacement clips here but for $7 might as well stash some bulk clip off another site. (Am I even allowed to say eBay here?)
We use fleet of these Walkie Talkies at my company that involve communicating through a buildings that are steel framed with metal sidings but had no issues so decided to get our own for number of trips during the summer.
Since my children have an age gap and the oldest is at the age where she likes to take off on her own at a mall or the zoo, it was a perfect fit. There's only so much a cell phone can do and the two-way not only makes it a breeze for instant communication but also really allows you to keep an eye on your surroundings including how I used it with watching my youngest. The belt clip/holster is easy enough to clip on but it won't easily fall off due to the design and will hook against your belt if you tug on it.
The volume is loud enough. When we went to the zoo in York Maine, we did turn up the volume about 75% when it was packed. Even outside the amusement area with roller coasters and other rides making noise on top of kids and adults talking, I heard my daughter just fine. I was for sure I would lose signal when she was 1/4 mile away in the butterfly garden with the mesh material covering the structure but we communicated with no problem. Very clear communication.
Now there were some concerning issues regards to the battery life. Within 3-4 hours of use my unit was showing one bar for the battery. I thought I had a dud as my daughter's unit had 2-bars. This is checking up on each other every few minutes or so on 50-75% volume. I forget the settings I had on so it may have contributed to it but in the end we had no problem using it for about six hours with one bar. Sometimes it showed two, back to one then two...
LCD screen is very vibrant and crisp. The buttons are easy to push but also you won't accidentally push the talk & menu buttons either. My daughter already dropped it number of times and no issues with the units so far.
Very minor gripe is the charging base. It charges fine but the units don't always sit straight and can sit tilted sideways which will cause the units to not charge so I would make sure they're standing upright.
For the price I highly recommend this two way. Like other reviews said don't expect more than a mile or two unless you have a very clear line of sight.
