The Motorola HS850 is the company's update to their HS810 headset, one of my personal favorites. The changes made to produce the new HS850 are few, but the effect is relatively substantial. But first, let's start with what is the same.
Like the HS810, the HS850 makes use of a body design that employs a folding microphone boom. The folding microphone boom acts as the on and off switch, as well as just providing a convenient way to make the headset smaller and more pocketable when not in use. When a call comes into your phone, you can turn on and answer the phone at the same time just by unfolding the microphone boom. You can end the call and turn it off by removing the headset and re-folding it. Using the headset in this way conserves battery power, since no battery juice is wasted on standby time - time where the headset sits around waiting to be contacted by a mobile phone or other compatible device. The physical design of the HS850 and the battery savings it imparts is my favorite aspect of the Motorola HS850.
The HS850 folds neatly and fits easily in your pocket. |
Of course you don't have to remove and turn off the headset between calls. If the headset is already on when an inbound call comes, you will hear the ringing come through on the headset and can answer it by pressing on the main multi-function call control button. You can end the call with this same button, and adjust volume levels with the two volume buttons. If you are using a phone that supports the Hands Free Bluetooth profile, then you can also use the call control button to reject an inbound call or redial the last number.
The HS850's audio properties are also like those of the HS810 before it. The audio quality in both directions is very clear and understandable, but sounds a bit thin. You and the party on the other end of the call will both be able to understand each other easily, it just doesn't sound as full and natural as it might with some other headsets. The HS850 makes up for this small lacking by having great resistance to wind noise, though. That makes the headset perfect for people that enjoy driving with their windows down, or those that work outside. Most headsets are very susceptible to wind noise, the HS850 bucks that trend.
Two softly pulsating blue LEDs signal when the headset is in use. |
And now for the new stuff. First up, a more powerful battery. The HS850 I tested managed an amazing 7 hours and 50 minutes of talk time. That is a full two thirds improvement over the older model. The truly amazing part is that this new battery life didn't come at the expense of added weight. Like the HS810 before it, the HS850 weighs only .7oz (19.9g).
The next major change perhaps sounds more important than it worked out to be in reality. The HS850 supports the newer Bluetooth v1.2 spec, whereas most headsets support v1.1 only. Motorola claims that when used with a v1.2 compatible phone (there are still relatively few available at the time I write this), the HS850 will be able to connect faster, use less battery power, and offer improved audio quality. While I can see what appears to be a slight improvement in connection speed, I haven't really noticed much of a change in battery life or audio quality.
The last major change is purely cosmetic. The new headset is sold in this very nice black color and is also available in blue-gray, like a darker version of the HS810's color. I find both colors more attractive than the light silver found on the HS810.
But regardless of the color, you can't go wrong with Motorola's HS850, which I consider to be perhaps the best value on the market.
Pros:
- Small, light
- Comfortable
- Nearly 8 hours of talk time
- No wind noise
- Can be worn on both ears
Cons:
- A bit unusual looking
- Audio lacks bass

Why then, you ask, did you rate it only four out of five stars? I'm glad you asked!
My disappointment came when I merged my cell phone and PDA by buying a smartphone, an HP iPaq. The headset connected to the new phone without a hitch and worked flawlessly... for a while.
After anywhere from a day to a month, without any warning, the headset would cease working, refusing to connect to the phone. The fix required hard resetting the phone every time it failed.
Since hard resetting at random intervals was hardly an acceptable way to go about business, I called Motorola for support. Without so much as a single step of troubleshooting I was told to contact the phone manufacturer, HP.
Would you like to guess what HP told me? If you guessed "Call Motorola", you win the cupie doll. After calling both manufacturers repeatedly, begging for any input they could give, HP admitted that this headset was not one of a very small group of headsets specifically approved as compatible with the phone. They added that not being on the list does not necessarily mean it won't work, after all it worked just fine for random periods of time (read: I very well could have a defective headset in my hands).
Motorola's response never waivered... "Go talk to HP."
I knock off a star not for the very plausible prospect that the problem could lie with the phone manufacturer, but for the less than cordial attitude. Refusing to even troubleshoot a product is called passing the buck. For all they knew, it very well could have been a defective unit but they were too quick to dismiss me to know for sure.
My solution was to buy a Jabra BT250v Bluetooth Headset with Vibrating Alert [Retail Packaged ], after which I had no problems.
My summary would be that this headset will likely perform beautifully with any Motorola phone. In fact, it probably works well with many other phones too- just don't expect to receive any support if your phone is not a Motorola.
For Switching it on you have to only lift up the mouth peice extension.
Secondly its easy to carry when the mouth peice is folded back.
Looks good and Moto is the best brand in Bluetooths according to my experience.
Though I ordered an item from "Bulk Packaged" items, I am satisfied and think its worth paying for this item than any other bluetooth available currently in the market.
The only thing to keep in mind is, after having it on, you may feel like it may fall but it doesn't. But the fitting is soft and the voice is crystal clear with good voice trasmission and reception. No probs...

This Bluetooth is really great as its handy and easy to carry. I gave it 4 stars because am facing a small issue with it. The issue is when I open the folded mouth piece it call automatically the last dialed number. This happened after alsmost 5months and am not surprised as eletronic items are some kind of luck.
Though I have been using Moto bluetooth since begining, I had no complaints about it ever. This is my 4th Moto piece and is total satisfactory.
Advantages:
1] Awesome/Descent looks.
2] Small, u can carry it always where ever you go.
3] Mouthpiece is foldable and the same works as switching off and on. Trust me its easy to pick a call with this functionality when ur bluetooth is off and u wanna turn it on.
4] No problem in sound quality. Crystal and clear in range of 20-25feet approx.
5] Worked with my Blackberry, Moto Razr and T-Mobile dash
6] Cheaper than the market cost
7] Can fit any ear (Left/Right)
8] Whispering is received clearly on the other end by keeping hand over the mouth.
Its worth, if had a problem with this will get another one for sure. No real cons :).
I bought this in May. I've used it off and on, but keep finding myself going back to just using the speakerphone to be hands free.
The fit is just not good for my ear. I'd say you should "try it on" before buying, but of course you can't. If you know someone who has one, maybe ask to borrow it. As other reviewers have mentioned, it just isn't a tight fit - it's not uncomfortable that way, but I would find that turning my head sharply to talk to my kids in the back seat would send it flying.
It was super easy to connect to the Razr phone, but some people would mention that they had a hard time hearing me when I used it. I could always hear the other person.
As it happens, my mother thought she had found this model of mine - I had to travel to her house within the last few weeks and hadn't seen it since - however, when I got it in the mail, it turns out to be an H700 model instead. We've asked all over, but can't find the owner, so I'm using it for now.
It fits my ear much better and has the same or better sound quality and features (I think maybe it's just not the newest connection speed, but neither are most phones.) Personally, I would recommend it over this HS850.
This wasn't bad, and certainly was a good price, but it didn't "wow" me. Not being an experienced bluetooth owner, maybe nothing would, but I can't give it more stars.
