What is an unlocked phone? An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan. |
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier. Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card. Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract. |
How do I set up my unlocked phone? The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination. |

Its hard to imagine any other phone at this price delivering a better user experience. The screen is vivid, bright, and quite sharp. The build quality is excellent. The back of the phone has a smooth, grippy feel usually found on more premium phones. The screen size is a little on the small side but has the advantage of being easy to use with one hand. The software and user experience is where this phone really shines. I prefer to use the pure android kitkat OS running on this MOTO E than a top of the lung Samsung or LG phone running a heavily customized skin of android full of carrier bloat apps. This phone handles typical smartphone functions like email, calendar, facebook, social media, and streaming media very smoothly. Google maps and google now ran smoothly. The battery life seemed quite good, but I didn't use it long enough to make a fair assessment.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the only major drawback I find to this phone is the camera. I don't mind the lack of a front facing camera, but the lack of flash and the poor quality of the rear facing camera is what would keep me from using this as my daily phone. If capturing important moments with your phone camera is important to you, the consider paying the $50 or so dollars more to jump up to the Moto G which at least offers a flash.
If you're strapped for cash or don't plan on using the camera frequently, than this is a solid option. However, given that the Moto G can be had for $50 more, I feel that the Moto G offers essentially a no-compromise user experience and would be worth the investment for most users. Either way you spin it, you're still paying a fraction of the cost of a premium handset on contract.
Pros: Nice resolution on the screen, almost completely stock Android operating system, 32gig micro SD slot (you will want to put one in), not the fastest processor but definately fast enough (no noticeable lag in any application so far although a gammer might challenge it). Can use them outside the use with any compatible sim card.
Cons: No front facing camera, no flash but for $130 it is not a show stopper. We use an iPad for FaceTime anyway and don't do selfies.
I bought a second one for my wife and she is thrilled. The screen is big enough and clear enough to read from and it sync's with Amazon Kindle so she can use it on the go. The phone audio quality is good and the signal strength seems strong. It also works flawlessly with Google (you would expect that being a Google company).
We use this on Consumer Cellular (which runs on ATT's network) and it works great. Cost wise you can't beat this deal....$130 for the phone from Amazon x2 and $37/month for 200 shared mins and 100mb's of shared data. That is enough for us since we run wifi most of the time, especially if we are streaming any significant content. CS lets you up your plan if you get close on usage and they notify you if you do. For $5 more we can get 500 shared mins anytime. No contract.
So $260 for two really nice and capable smart phones with a $37/month total for both....Can't beat this deal. At least I can't find a way too!
This phone has been with me for a good 5-6 months now. It's still working just as good as the day it came. I'm using a sim card from straight talk and the only issue ive had recently is a error that occurred causing my sim to lock itself to a 2g (E) connection. 3g(H) became un usable. I contacted Straight talk about it and they could not figure out what happened but worked with me and sent me a new sim card. With a replacement sim card everything is working just as it should.
The speaker volume is ok but nothing loud. In a busy or noisy place its quickly drowned out.
FM radio works wonders this is one of my favorite things that Motorola has included in their phones and i wish i had been using there phones sooner.
Battery life is pretty good considering what i use the phone for. It generally last me 2 to 2.5 days on a full charge. I don't play a ton of games on mobile or anything just brows the web and use apps like twitter etc. Signal is good in most places where i live but some buildings cause the phones signal quality to become rather poor. But from what i can tell from my coworkers almost every phone has this problem in my building so thats no surprise.
Ive dropped it a few times (with an "Exact Moto E Case") and 0 damage so far.
Overall good for the price and it working exactly for what i bought it for.
I do plan to upgrade to the moto X when the battery on this phone no longer wants to hold a charge though.

This phone is a game changer for me, improving the quality of my life. I also have a laptop. Much to my surprise, I find it much easier to read on this phone than any other kind of reading I do -- be it real pages or my old laptop. It's really super, this phone I mean, and I am very happy with it.
I researched all cell phones prior to purchasing this one and chose this one because of what people say about it, and I've discovered, to my delight, that it's all true. Great purchase! Plus, I have grown sons, so I am of 'that' generation and I do think that anyone of my generation -- any other parents out there?-- would love this phone, so -- if you are able do not hesitate to buy it for your mom or dad!
