MOTO 360 MENS SMALL, BLACK LEATHER BAND,
Top customer reviews
I'm currently using this watch with my iPhone 6 and am so far loving it. I bought this watch knowing the limitations of an android watch paired with an IOS device. It lacks the features to support 3rd party apps, being able to reply to text messages, and being able to buy custom watch faces. While I do wish I could get more watch faces for my watch, it's not enough for me to dislike the watch. You might be asking, why buy this watch if its features are limited for IOS users? Well, personally I love the look of this watch and I've been eyeing a smart watch for a while. The square design of the Apple watch is unappealing to me, and I've also looked at other Android watches like the Urbane, which I found a little too chunky for my tastes. The Moto watch has a circular face, a clean look, ability to change bands, and doesn't look too chunky and thick. I love watches as fashion statements and couldn't pass this one up.
The watch itself is beautiful and I have seen both the black and cognac leather models before deciding to make my purchase. To me, the cognac leather one felt more like a day to day watch that is simple yet sophisticated. The black one looked more to me like a sports watch, and has a shiny bezel that looks almost plastic-like that ultimately bothered me. Had the bezel been matte, I might have had a harder time deciding between the two colors.
Setting up the watch was very easy. Out of the box, my watch came with a 60% charge. I set up the charging dock and laid the watch on it, which immediately turned it on. It prompted me to pair my phone. You'll need to download the AndroidWear app from the App store. From there, the watch will guide you step by step on how to pair it with your phone. You'll basically need to search for the watch on the app and pair it via bluetooth. The watch will find your phone to pair, and within a minute they should be paired! As easy as that. So far, I have only faced connectivity issues when my phone runs out of battery or the AndroidWear app that runs in the background is terminated. As long as the app is running in the background of your phone, the connectivity will always be on. The connection between the watch and the phone so far has been very good and I've never had any problems using it on a day to day basis.
The features of the watch are also simple and easy to use. You swipe right to dismiss a notification and swipe up or down to see new notifications, the weather, stocks, etc. You'll be able to receive texts and read them, but will be unable to reply. Mostly useful if you need to read them and can't pull out your phone. The watch will send a quiet vibration to your wrist to notify you of an incoming call or text, which is great if you're like me and your phone is on silent 24/7. You'll be able to check the weather, check heart rate with Moto body, receive notifications from people calling, receive live Google map navi directions, and check on stocks. If you allow Google to access your location data it keeps track of where you go and gives you estimates of how long it will take you to get to your destination according to your daily schedule (I found this a neat feature). As for watch faces, there is a button on the AndroidWear app that says "More" next to Watch Faces, click that and click on the bottom where it says "Get More Watch Faces" and you'll be able to download more from a small selection. A good one to start is ustwo Watch Faces, which comes with a bundle of watch faces. I know the selection is not as vast as the Android store but at least it's something! I find myself using the pre-loaded watch faces and actually quite enjoy them. My number one concern about buying the watch as an IOS user was being unable to change and buy new watch faces. After using the watch for a while I became quite satisfied with the collection of faces as I realized I didn't change the faces all that much. A favorite face of mine is "HUD" from the ustwo collection, which is shown in the photo I've uploaded. A neat trick to change the background and accent of your watch face is to press down on the screen and a row of watch faces will appear. Click on the gear (settings) on the bottom and you can change the background and accent to mix up the style of the watch face. I change the background/ accent once in a while and it really refreshes the look of a particular watch face.
The display is crisp and the letters look very good. I love it compared to my wife's Apple Watch. I'm not a big fan of the small, rectangular screen so I went with the Moto watch and I haven't regretted it! While it lacks 3rd party app support for IOS, my reason to get a watch was mainly for getting call and text notifications, being able to check my stocks with ease, and of course looking at the time without pulling up my phone. If you're looking for a sophisticated and beautiful watch that delivers those features then you'll love this watch. If you're looking for 3rd party app support and must have custom watch faces and the ability to reply to texts then this watch won't cut it if you're an IOS user. If my review has been helpful please click the helpful button! It really helps as I take my reviews seriously and aim to improve them! Feel free to drop a question in the comments section if you need anything specific to be answered as I'll try my best to answer any questions you might have about the watch.
Edit: I received a question regarding if this watch can receive tweets, Facebook messages, messages on IOS and the answer is yes! The watch utilizes the notifications feature on the iPhone so any app that has notifications enabled should show on the watch. I use it everyday with Facebook messenger, messages, stock apps, etc and have yet to miss a notification. The only way it will not show on the watch is if you're already using the phone, then it will assume you have already seen the notification on your phone.
After downloading the free Android Wear app from the App Store, the watch paired right away per the instructions included with the watch. The app offers a little walk through to familiarize yourself with the app, as well as a tutorial given to you on the watch itself. Immediately, I received an iMessage notification on the watch and had the joy of reading it right on my wrist!
The major setbacks of pairing this watch with iOS that I have found are as follows:
- No way to reply to iMessages or SMS messages from the watch. You may only view/read the message, and dismiss it. While this can be hampering at times, it is still a nice feature to be able to read your messages when you are in a meeting or unable to take your phone out of your pocket. Also - You can reply to Gmail if rich Gmail cards are enabled inside of the Android Wear App on your phone. Be aware though, you only can speak your reply, and it sends without any way to modify it. So speak clearly if you want to take your chances!
- No/very limited Wi-Fi functionality. The only function of the Wi-Fi feature when paired with an iOS phone is to update the watch.
- No contact photos display when receiving text messages or phone calls. Of course, their name still displays along with the icon of whichever app they are using to contact you with.
- Very limited selection of watch faces to choose from. The ones that come on the watch are not bad by any means, and most of them offer a lot of customization options. Coming from using analog watches, I usually use the "Essential" or "Minimal" faces, and change the accent color (in this case, the Second hand) to match my attire for the day. You can download select additional faces through the Android Wear app, but the selection is limited to around 20 collections.
- No third-party apps. This never bothered me until I paired with an android phone just to see what I was missing out on. Wow! This watch is really amazing when you discover its capabilities with third-party apps. My favorite was the use of Google Maps, when your GPS displays right on the watch screen. With iOS, you are stuck with the apps that come on the watch. I will say a handy feature
(with iOS) is when you use Google Maps on your phone and your phone screen is shut off, you will still receive direction notifications on your watch.
However, Android Wear 2.0 will be released soon and it is expected to allow you to download apps directly from the watch (opposed to downloading them through your phone), which may mean good news for iOS users! This may also allow for third-party watch faces to become available.
- No connectivity with the iOS health app (Health) or Google Fit. Can only use Moto Body which comes on the watch, but it is still great for counting steps and calories burned.
The Agenda app on the watch will sync with either the Apple Calendar app or Google Calendar (you can change this in your settings through the Android Wear app), and alert you for upcoming meetings or display reminders and events. If you use GMail, I would recommend using the Google Calendar app, because any plain ticket or appointment that comes through your GMail will automatically be added into your calendar, thus alerting on your watch when the time comes.
Also, the watch will display any notification you receive, no matter from what app. In other words, if you receive a notification that pops up on your lockscreen or notification pull-down on your phone, it will display and alert you on your wrist.
This is, in my opinion, the best looking smartwatch available. The next best-looking, the Huwei Watch (In my opinion), is not as attractive due to the bulky casing past the circular watch inclosure. This watch has a very classic look, with the elegant lugs and an easily accessible band.
Coming from years of wearing analog watches, This was the only watch I felt completely fit the style I normally wear.
The 20mm band (on the 42mm men's model) is easily replaceable with any 20mm watch band - NOT JUST ONES LABLED FOR USE WITH SMARTWATCH. However, finding ones with quick-release pins are much nicer and easier to change out than standard pins. I change my band out very frequently (a few times a week), depending on my attire.
The "Flat Tire" as it has been called is not a big a deal as I thought it might be. This was another aspect that made me consider the Huwei Watch, but it has not bothered me much in my time that I have been using the watch. If using a face that is black, it is not noticeable at all. After all, this allows for a smaller bezel on the enclosure which is nice.
The screen resolution is not anything impressive, especially in todays standards for Retina displays and such, but offers plenty of resolution for it to look good. The Moto 360 2015 is on par with other smartwatches of today. If you look at the screen up close, you will see slight pixelation, but looking from a normal distance while on your wrist, you would never know its not million ppi screen.
There is no speaker inside of the watch, nor a headphone jack. So, you cannot use your watch as a phone. When you receive a call, you can still choose to accept or dismiss it, but after accepting the call, you must have your phone ready in hand, or at least the ability to talk through another bluetooth device.
I used to wear smaller watches (for men) ~ 32mm to 38mm casings, so I was weary about the size of this watch when ordering. I knew I would not be able to wear the 46mm, so I took a chance on the 42mm, and now I don't think I could ever wear anything smaller again! The jump from 38mm to 42mm is not a lot, and still looks great on your wrist. The height is a little taller than standard analog watches, but not unnatural looking.
It feels very solid and sturdy, yet light weight - not any more or less weight than a standard watch. The battery life is great, usually ending up with a little over 20% left after a 7:00am-11:00pm day (you can't expect it to get any better than that, especially with an alway on screen), and charging is as easy as resting the watch on the cradle that comes with it when I go to bed. It also switches to a digital clock while charging, great for bedside use. If you need to squeeze more battery life out of it, you can disable the always on screen from the settings on the watch, and through the Android Wear app.
Through every day use over a period of a few months, I have acquired no scratches or scuffs on the bezel or casing, however I have gone through a few screen protectors. The glass of the screen protrudes out further than anything else on the watch, so it is most exposed to potential scratches. I can not speak as to the durability of the screen glass since I have always used film and glass protectors on it. Protect it!!! - It is so cheap and effective to just purchase a film or glass screen protector and not have to worry about it. It is a watch. On your wrist. It will get banged, bumped, scuffed, scratched, and everything else that comes along with being on one of your extremities.
The reason I gave this watch 5/5 stars is because it has met and exceeded every aspect of everything I expected from it. I went into it knowing I would be forfeiting many features for using it paired with my iPhone, so I can only hope this review will do the same for you in knowing what to expect. When I tested it paired with an android phone, I was even more blown away with the features it possessed, but I cannot take away any stars for me wanting to use an iPhone with something called "Android Wear". Like I said though, there is hope for more functionality when paired with iOS on the horizon - Android Wear 2.0 is supposed to be released this fall, and maybe I will update my review once it gets released.
