I picked up this phone for $44.99, which is insanely cheap for a decent Android phone off-contract. The description says that the phone is Verizon pre-paid only-- but that's not true! I put my post-paid SIM card in the phone before turning the phone on for the first time, and it worked without any issues. I bought this phone as a replacement for my current device (this was $100 cheaper than paying for a replacement phone through Assurion). I would recommend this phone for anyone who needs a replacement phone to get them by for a few months until their contract is up for renewal. It's not a top-end phone by any means, but it works well and I'm not missing my old HTC One Max (a phone with far superior hardware). This phone is also running Android 5.0 out-of-the-box. For this price, you're not going to find a better phone-- whether this is a replacement OR your primary phone.

[Additionally, you can find ways to use this phone with other carriers (like T-Mobile, ATT, Sprint, etc.) on the XDA-Developers forum. You have to do a little bit of work, but it's definitely worth for the versatility of being able to drop in a SIM card from any carrier.]

I have an iPhone 6 provided from my job but I like to keep my personal phone separate from work. I wanted something on Verizon prepaid and I didn't want to spend a lot. I have to say, I'm really impressed by the moto e. My last phones have been the galaxy s5, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 6. All great phones, but really, at $500-$600 new, they really ought to be. First off, its been awhile since I have experienced android and I have to say it's come a long way. If you are a heavy google user, (maps, chrome, gmail etc) it really is a no brainer to have an android phone. The apple versions of these apps work, but just not as seemlessly and effortlessly. All that aside, this is a $47 phone I'm reviewing. The fact that I use my iPhone 6 next to this and its not awful says it all. Its fast enough for regular use, it loads everything quickly , build quality is pretty standard and solid, battery lasts all day. The places this phone falls short are screen resolution and camera quality. The screen resolution is noticeable against an iPhone but I was less bothered by it than I thought I would be. The camera is probably the only reason I could see myself ever needing more phone than this. That said, if makes me feel more inclined to take pics with my real camera which blows my iPhone away, so maybe not the worst thing. All said I can't say enough about how much I like this phone at this price point. I mean, the case I bought for my iPhone cost me $10 less than this entire phone. Its liberating to know its not the end of the world if something happens to it. Last but not least, I bought a 32gig SD card ( the max the moto e can handle) and increased my storage to 40 gigs for $13. Those constant messages about my storage running low on my iPhone 6 sting just a little bit more these days. Not a perfect phone, but at $47 brand new, if this isn't 5 stars, what is?

If you're looking for an entry level device, look no further. The Moto E stands out from the alternatives in performance and hardware, and running on Verizon's LTE network you'll never be without coverage. Entry level devices are not my thing - my daily driver is a Nexus 6 on Google's Project Fi, and if you are a Fi user you know that coverage isn't yet what it should be. So, since I am firmly convinced that Fi will eventually be an amazing cell service, instead of leaving I decided to grab a cheap prepaid phone to use as a hotspot to power my Fi phone when their service fails. Enter the Moto E. While it was purchased just to be used as a Wifi Hotspot, I find myself using it quite often. The size is perfect, performance is great, and unlike many alternatives it is running the latest version of Android, 5.1. It's no competition for my Nexus 6, obviously, but I have to say performance wise I don't notice much difference when using simple apps or browsing websites - and that says a whole lot for this phone. Seriously speaking I'd say its on par with the Galaxy S4.

The battery will get you more than a full day, the display is decent, the android build is smooth and without lags. For under $50 this phone is a winner all day. Perfect choice for a backup or economical choice. Score one for Moto!

I'm giving it a full 5 stars because of the features vs cost - if I was going on phone alone I'd probably go with 4 stars. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money for a phone or have a long lasting contract. Some pros and cons

Pros: cost, Lollipop 5, long battery life, stripped down Android, nice size, strong signal, 4G LTE, front facing camera that I can use with Skype, nice speed - but I'm comparing with a Galaxy S 3

Cons: locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked, unable to root (probably more a function of lollipop), no NFC, 8GB vs 16Gb of internal memory - just make sure to get an SD card and move apps to the SD card that allow for it - I have a good number of the popular apps and still have 1GB free

At less than $50, this is value. It will access LTE data, get you around the web, provide Google's voice-prompted turn-by-turn navigation, YouTube, the voice-recognition capability of Google Now, and speak-to-type. Its specs aren't premium, but you're paying less than $50 and getting a reliable old Chevy truck that won't die, that will get you out of Dodge when the zombie apocalypse comes, will start when you need it, get you through a blizzard to the grocery store or hospital. No, this isn't the status symbol see-and-be-seen luxury ride. If you want that, then pay 10 to 20 times more. Yes, 10 to 20 times more. A Nexus 6 is $549. An iPhone 6S Plus 128GB is $949 before tax. So, no, it's not a badass Secret Service-looking black Suburban, a Hummer, a Range Rover, or Porsche Cayenne, but it will get you to the same places. It is an entry-level Android and a full-on smartphone without qualification quotes. By 2015 standards, Motorola has provided a solidly functional and capable device that will perform what a smartphone should be able to perform in 2015. This is a smartphone, no doubt about it. This is perfect for a backup phone if you're between premium phones - say, selling one top of the line phone while waiting for the release date of the next latest and greatest.
