I have been wearing the Tech Vest more than any other single technical layer over the past 2+ years. I saw that a new generation came out a while back, but refrained from purchasing it since this piece has been going so strong for so long. SOMEHOW, the resin knob at the end of the main zipper got caught in the drier door as I was loading it in there with other clothing and it snapped off. I have super-glued it back on, and hopefully it stays attached. Upon closer inspection of the clothing, there is about a 3mm hole on the inside liner of either side of each hand-pocket zipper base. The vest is otherwise looking none the worse for wear, considering the heavy use it's been through.
I would like to rescind my remark about sizing, as I managed to find the ultimate layering system with a slim base layer, a slim but ultra-warm mid layer fleece, the Thermostatic hooded puffy and Ghost Lite jacket under the vest, which easily handled freezing to sub-freezing temperatures in Nepal, all in a compact form factor.
I found a great deal on the 2nd Gen Tech Vest and ordered it tonight, in order to offset some of the heavy wear. Sometimes you wish you would have picked up two pieces of certain clothing, and that's certainly where I stand regarding the 1G Tech Vest.
ORIGINAL REVIEW -- 12/11/13 -- 4 Stars
I have been pining over a technical vest to wear for hiking and other outdoor rec activities, especially as this winter has been particularly frigid for California. Unfortunately, I didn't get the vest in time to wear when I hiked most of the trails in Pinnacles National Monument, which kept flipping from mild and sunny to shaded and freezing wind blasted on north side trails. The fit is as good as I could reasonably hope, almost perfect in the chest, but too loose in the waist. I suspected I wouldn't find a vest that really fit my torso, so I was sure to choose one with drawstrings at the waist. I'm 5'10" with a large chest and 29-30" waist, and the small size seems adequate for my needs. I can easily wear a base and mid layer underneath, and an extra shirt, but it's hard to imagine needing that much under this vest. This will be great for hiking and probably perfect for back country tours on a split board. Five stars if the waist was contoured to trap more heat.
I really like it for what it is and it seems to be very well made. Time will tell if the material gets ratty like another person talked about. I can see how that might be the case but I do take very good care of things. Overall I would recommend this to people but just be prepared for it to possible fit too tightly or lose depending on size etc.
