At Mountain House, we trace our roots to meals we made for the United States Special Forces.
During the Vietnam Conflict, the military put out a request for food that tasted better, lasted longer and weighed less than old K and C rations. Our parent Company, Oregon Freeze Dry, responded to that request and won the contract. We immediately started making freeze dried food as Long Range Patrol rations for the military. We've continued making food for the United States Special Forces and other branches of the military ever since.
As the war began to wind down, we took our surplus rations to military surplus and sporting goods stores. It was then in 1969 that we realized the great for good tasting, easy to prepare freeze dried food and Mountain House was born.

Mountain House chicken and rice is pretty much the gold standard of freeze dried food. Between this and their Chili Mac, you can’t go wrong. The flavor is good and the portions are about right for normal (seriously normal) servings. If you are new to freeze dried food, get a single serving a try it before buying a number 10 can of it. If you already know you like the flavor, carry on, get the big can. It’s much more affordable than buying the individual packages. The cans stack well and usually offer, realistically 8 servings per can. Count on 4 meals for 2 people per can. Just remember, this is freeze dried food. If you are used to large meals, this may be an adjustment for you.
It’s also important to know how much sodium is in this stuff. It’s good for emergencies or for camping for a couple of days but it’s definitely not health food and the sodium content, not just salt but preservative sodium, is high. 730mg per cup (1 serving) for the chicken and rice. It is gluten free which is good, just make sure to read the labels and know your dietary needs when planning for emergencies.
Overall Mountain House is good emergency food. Definitely better flavor than MREs and with a 25 year shelf life, it’s good to set a few cans aside for that unforeseen flood, snowstorm, global pandemic, whatever.
I highly recommend this (and the Pad Thai, but that's another review🙂).
