Top Customer Reviews
1. They actually taste fantastic
2. They're very easy to make
3. They're surprisingly affordable
When its pouring rain and you just hike over boulders with a 30-40lb pack for an entire day, Mountain House meals are easy to prepare and taste better than they should. Don't change a thing, I can't wait to share these same meals with my kids when they're old enough to camp.
Just make sure you're patient and follow the directions - if you dig into them too fast you'll burn your mouth and the food will still be crunchy.
First off if you're expecting a five star breakfast from a fancy restaurant you will not find it here and maybe you shouldn't be backpacking. It's backpacking food!
I made sure I added boiling water. Make sure the water is at a ROLLING BOIL when adding. I did a things different than the directions and they came out just fine every time even from the first one.
Again, make sure the water is at a rolling boil before adding water. After adding the water I stirred it before resealing the bag. I placed the bag inside my beanie or wrapped a shirt around the bag keeping it covered for 10 to 15 minutes. This helped any heat loss through the bag, if any. After the 10 to 15 minutes I open the bag and stirred the food making sure it was all rehydrated. Which it was every time. I never had a soupy or crunchy breakfast, like some pictures I've seen.
Not exactly fluffy eggs like your 5 Star Restaurant but again it's freeze dried backpacking food. It has good flavor, calories and protein all which you need while backpacking. And these breakfast couches turned out just fine every time with my variations.
They are also more filling than you would expect for one packet. We were all worried we would be hungry as the scouts were all 14-18 years old and each packet more than fed a single person. Plenty of calories to give you the needed strength after a long hike. They are also light weight so they worked great for our long hike.
Most importantly, they taste really good. I am a food lover, so was a bit worried about freeze dried food, but I was pleasantly surprised and found myself excited for the next meal.
I highly recommend the Mountain House meals for both your outdoor adventures and also food storage.
Preparation was easy, open bag, remove the oxygen absorber, add 1 cup boiling water and stir. Reseal for 4 minutes. Stir. Seal an additional 5 minutes and eat.
I could immediately smell breakfast when I added the water which I took as a good sign. It smelled GOOD. My mouth was actually watering. Looks wise it was a little less appealing, kind of like a mushy casserole... but this is what you have to expect when it's all mixed together. The taste was good too. I think the smell might have been slightly better than the taste though.
Consistency wise I had a few issues. Some of the larger chunks of egg did not fully absorb the water so they were still hard in the middle and not pleasant to bite into. Once I bit into one I could tell right away. I avoided large chunks like that there were three in all. You can't get a fork to cut them so they are pretty noticeable. Also I found a piece of gristle in one of my small sausage chunks which was a little gross, but you get that with sausage that just goes with the territory there.
I DEFINITELY would get these for camping though, they are super simple and if the rest of the meals have this quality of taste then I think they would be a hit with my family. They would be way easier to pack and store and certainly much easier to make!!
