Of the Mountain House entrees tried so far, here is how they rank for me.
Five stars (in no particular order):
- Chili mac with beef
- Beef stroganoff
- Beef stew
- Rice and chicken
- Spaghetti with beef
- Lasagna with beef
- Noodles and chicken
- Chicken teriyaki
This was my first ever Mountain House entree test. I even remembered to take out the little absorbency pouch. I would have given it 5 stars except the beef was a bit rubbery. It was not bad but a little different from what I am accustomed to as far as beef texture goes.
I stirred in 2 cups of boiling water, stirred it, sealed it, and let it sit for 9 minutes as recommended. The bag got pretty hot to the touch so watch it around kids. Upon opening I was greeted by pleasant tomato sauce aromas and piping hot chili mac. It was a little watery but not bad. I will try 1 3/4 cups water next time and see how that works out. I'm sure it would have still thickened a little more if I had left a couple minutes longer.
So, the noodles were done perfectly. The beans were also great. The sauce was terrific. It even had a slight amount of spice that kicked in after a few bites but it was very pleasing to the taste buds. I emptied my bowl in minutes. YUM!
Half a bag was the right amount for a small meal for one. So this would feed 2 people very easily (assuming you are not starving). Also, if you paired it with another small snack you would be all set. Also, I tried this at home in a non-starving situation. I can only imagine that after a day of hiking or in a severe hunger situation this will taste even better.
Well, after a successful test, I will be on to my next flavor in a couple of days... I will review the next entree at that time. That's it for now, thanks for reading my review.
The chili mac is great. In fact, having tried many different Mountain House products, this one is my favorite and also my wife's favorite. My suggestion is to let the noodles "cook" in the bag for an extra 30 seconds beyond the directions so that they are soft all the way through. The chili mac tastes great, especially after a long day of hiking. It doesn't require any extra seasoning, though I suppose you could add a bit of salt or pepper if you really wanted it. It is very easy to prepare, doesn't take up much space in your bag, and has a very long shelf life. All that said, I highly recommend Mountain House products.
