The mountain king was a five-star novel if not for the numerous typos . Great story with great characters . I felt bad for the mountain king. He didn't know anything other than what he did .

Definitely a page turner, this author knows how to write action very well. My only complaint is the frequent spelling errors including using the number 1 as an "l" multiple times. Hoping that was just an error when it was reformatted.

Definitely not what I expected in a horror novel. I dislike posting negative reviews, so I'll start out by saying I enjoyed the writing style of the author. The story moved quickly. It was clear and straightforward. I'm beginning to think I need to stay away from male authors because the last several of their books I've read, horror or otherwise, have hinged on soft core porn. The description talked about couples trying to save their marriage, but what I found was page after page of writing that was FAR too explicit for me to stomach. Just not my thing. And for someone who's positively terrified of snakes, I didn't find it all that horrifying. I've been a horror film and novel addict my entire life, but this just didn't cut it for me.

A Fun Read

The Mountain King is part of the Resurrected Horrors series for mostly deceased authors of the past, brought back to life. It’s great to have these old classics presented in a new light. There are some real gems that deserve another chance in the spotlight.

I was sent this one for review and when I first got it, I’ll admit it had a red flag on the cover with an endorsement by Stephen King. I’ve been burned too many times in the past with tomes endorsed by the “master” that turned out to be terrible.

In this case, King happened to get it right, at least for my taste as The Mountain King was some pretty decent icky bug. In this case, the icky bugs (my term for monsters) were rattlesnakes. This was a great B-movie creature feature story.

Now, that being said, this story wasn’t without its flaws. It starts out pretty slow and maybe one reason King loved it so much is that a good bit of real estate is taken up with a literary character study, which had little to do with the action. As a result, the first half crawled, except for the intro to each part where we go inside the head of the big icky bug, which was a nice touch. In that respect, it kind of helps build the tension.

As for tension, it takes a while for the real tension to hit, like two-thirds through before things really start to happen. Oh, there was tension, but most of it was sexual, or jealousy or anger or people issues, but not monster issues.

As for the writing itself, it’s obviously based on late seventies standards, though there are plenty of recent examples that aren’t too far off that mark out there as well. The author loves colons, semi-colons and dashes. Though he writes in solid third-person past-tense, he keeps it in basically omniscient point of view and head hops all over the place. It was jarring in many places where he would just shift from one character’s head to the next right in the middle of a scene, from one physical location to the next, as well. There were also a fair, but not excessive amount of typos.

However, the scenes and chapters were relatively short and despite the draggy first half, the story still moved fairly fast. I also liked the ending.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I had a great time. I was able to close the book with a smile on my face. Highly recommended.
