I was given the pleasure of receiving an ARC of the entire trilogy. Having never read much of anything in this particular genre, I was curious. Also, having read so little in this genre gave me little basis for comparison, which is a good thing. I like when a book sets the tone for a genre.
Anyhow, now to my review. These are my honest opinions and I do NOT know the author.
The beginning moved a little slow for my pace. It felt like I was being 'told' more than 'shown' the story. It was eloquently written, but just a bit of what I call a 'cold start'. After a few chapters, however, Ms. Alexander really begins to dig her nails in and starts showing us the meat. Once I hit this point, I was interested. Still, there seemed to be more telling rather than showing. I could feel as if she held back---maybe from fear, nervousness, or something--but was not unleashing her inner writing beast until a quarter of the way through. Once she got comfortable (this pertains to book one, mind you), oh, the game was on!!! From here all the way to the end of the entire trilogy, Ms. Alexander had you in her grasp and wasn't letting go. Overall, I absolutely LOVED it. It was only the slow start and the feeling of holding back that dropped what would have been a 5 star to a 3.5 star.
I highly recommend this book.
