I throw a couple of water bottles in it, and he gets a lot more exercise than he normally would. Which is why I love it. A tired dog is a good dog.
The only problem is that the sizing might be a bit off. Admittedly, my dog is a weird shape: broad but very short, about 65 pounds and only 18" at the shoulder. (He's a rott/beagle mix.) I bought a medium but it is still a bit big. When cinched tight, the bags actually wrap a little bit under his belly instead of hanging at his sides like they are supposed to. It isn't a big deal for what we use it for (at most, he wears it for a couple of hours), but if your dog wears it for long periods while backpacking, it might become a problem.
Construction quality is top-notch. He has worn it quite a bit, swimming/wading with it on, banging into trees (and my legs), running through brush. I've washed it a couple of times. Everything is holding up well.
He is quiet huge and for this reason I purchased the medium sized backpack, the sizing for this item is correct if you ask me since its not often that a GS is considered the largest breed like a mastiff or something else.
One pocket has a smaller zippered pocket on the inside. On top is a yellow stretchy pull string for carrying loose items and on either side there are straps for more loose items. The top notch for attacking a leash is not durable and I would NOT use it for this purpose since its made of plastic but this could be easily fixed by replacing it with a good quality Carabiner or metal hoop purchased at home depot, which I plan to do.
My dog is has wonderful stamina and endurance since I run with him 4-6 times a week all year round in blazing hot weather and freezing cold and so the backpack is barely a burden on him although I think he does find it odd when getting in cars and running near trees since he often smashes the sides of bag into them. But besides this nuisance he doesn't even seem to notice its there.
If you want a backpack BUY THIS ONE!
As for quality, the bag seems great! Doesn't feel cheap or flimsy at all. If it breaks/malfunctions, I'll update this review. Til then, assume it's working well!
This was not an instant fix for pulling or other bad behaviors for my dog (I rescued him from a shelter, so he came with lots of bad habits). It definitely HELPED A LOT, but it wasn't like with the bag he suddenly became a perfect dog. The bag does everything I would want it to - tires him out faster, gives him a job (carrying his own water, poop bags, etc), and does this while staying in place and seemingly not bothering him at all. Each side has room for a regular plastic water bottle and some other things (for me that usually just means a bowl for the water). The mesh pocket is super easy to access and I use it for poop bags, treats, and my cell phone if I don't have a pocket myself (I don't really recommend that, though... my dog sometimes brushing the bag up against pretty much everything, so I sometimes worry he'll bang my phone against something too hard, but hasn't happened yet).
I agree with some of the other reviews that the plastic ring for attaching leashes is not the best choice - larger dogs could snap that if they pull hard enough. Hasn't happened to me yet (and my dog pulls if something catches his eye), but I wouldn't be surprised if it does someday. Other than that I am extremely happy. It does it's job, seems very well made and was incredibly easy to adjust to fit my dog's body.
