I was contacted by customer service and they sent me out a new one. And so far so good with the new one! Nice bag!
I loaded it to a weight of 30-lbs and started hiking near home. It was easy to adjust and felt very comfortable. A couple 10 mile hikes and all was good. Then I used every available compartment and attachment. When fully loaded it weighed 48-lbs. Time to head for the hills. For me that was far too much weight for comfort on the trails. Whereas the pack was stable and well balanced I couldn't seem to get that comfortable feel, just too much weight pulling back on my chest. It was suggested by other hikers that the discomfort was caused primarily due to the location of the "magic straps" (load adjusting straps at top of shoulder straps) being located too far back on the shoulder strap. I had them pulled in as far as possible but that wasn't enough. If I grabbed the top of the pack and pulled it forward ever so slightly, the weight distribution on my chest was greatly relieved. For the remainder of my hike I removed approximately 12-lbs and all was better. For my current level of strength I'll try to limit my loaded pack weight to 35-lbs max and all will be good. ;)
EDIT: I initially had problems with comfort but that was resolved after I realized that I could adjust the "magic straps" better by moving the slide-bar buckle further down the shoulder strap, away from my back. This allowed me to bring the load forward which made a huge difference. I can now comfortably carry that full 48 lb load, but choose not to. I had way more stuff than was necessary!
Things about the pack that I would change:
1) use quick release buckles exclusively, no slide-bar buckles
2) raise the lower side compression straps so they are slightly above the side mesh pockets
So few changes says a lot for this pack. I would highly recommend!
Materials: Excellent. It's made of very durable ripstop nylon that is relatively lightweight and water resistant. The coolest feature is that the plastic hardware like the buckles, as well as the zippers...are YKK brand! If you've never heard of it, YKK is the brand that bag hardware is measured up to. They make the best zippers and buckles that I've ever seen, personally.
Design: There is a nice dedicated sleeping bag compartment at the bottom with compression straps on the front of it that double as a way to carry a tent or sleeping mat. There is a single external pocket right on the front of the pack, but it is flat, so if the main compartment is packed full, you won't be able to get a tremendous amount of gear in this particular pocket. On both sides, you'll see a mesh water bottle pocket, two compression straps, and a shock corded toggle to attach your trekking poles. The lid is great, and adds about 5 liters or so of storage. The top of the lid includes nylon strapping to attach a tent, sleeping pad, jacket, etc...if desired. There's a mesh pocket underneath it (that's small) and then the large (roughly 5L) pocket on the outside.
Suspension: One word can really sum it up, and that word would be "Perfect". As you can tell, it's adjustable. I'm 6'1, 250ish, with a 21 inch torso...and it fits me fine. It also fits my wife who is only 5'. The straps are significantly padded, and there is an adjustable sternum strap with elastic sewn into it so that it moves with you. The padding on the hip belt is incredible, and there is a plastic stiffener in it to help support the weight. There is a pocket on the right side of the hip belt, but it's tough to get to if you have a larger waist.
Overall, this is an incredible value for the pack, and I highly recommend it!
However, not very comfortable. The armature is only made with one central metal stick (photo), while usually backpacks have 2 each side. There is no lombar support. Very hard time to adjust to my torso length because it wasn’t comfortable. I had to use a longest torso length to hike peacefully. The hip belt (very comfy) is also made too large, so If you are skinny, avoid this pack. Not easy to grab the water bottle when in the side mesh pocket.
