About the Author

I break fairy tales and fuse fantasy and science fiction. I love to write about embattled heroes who never give up, transformation and redemption, and things from outer space. In my spare time I read, doodle, eat chocolate, avoid housework, and homeschool my three children. A native of Pakistan, I grew up in hot, humid Karachi. I then spent almost a decade in Northern New England where I learned to love fall, tolerate snow, and be snobbish about maple syrup and sweet corn. I now live in Northern Virginia.

I’ve been on a kick lately, enjoying some awesome new indie reads… first Andrea K. Host, now Rabia Gale. Mourning Cloak is science fantasy novella where magic mixes with mech, and gods reveal the patterns of the world to their chosen ones, and scientists twist ethics in their laboratories, purportedly for the good of humankind. That right there is the basis for a fantastic story, and Gale doesn’t disappoint with her characters. Kato Vorsok was once the Chosen One, and now he mixes drinks for theater-goers. He is bitter, and broken, and soul-weary, and then a demon creature (a mourning cloak) speaks his name and looks at him with human eyes. And just like that, Kato begins to make choices again, choosing his steps, choosing his questions, choosing who and what to fight for, choosing to live or die. As for the mourning cloak… Gale did a wonderful job unraveling the mystery of who / what she is, keeping you intrigued and stringing you along for the perfect reveal.

Story aside, Gale has a gift for language. I paused a couple of times just to savor a particular description–I can’t remember the last time I did that. Just sat and let a description sink in, let the images come to life in my mind. Additionally, Gale is a minimalist when it comes to world building, and I mean this in the best way. No info dumps. No ten-page-long let-me-explain-the-gods-and-the-government-to-you spiels. Instead, you step right into a very rich world, and get only just enough info to put the world together as you go. It keeps you thinking, keeps you intrigued as you put the puzzle of the world together in your mind, and I loved it. However, if you prefer the world to be explained to you, even a little, I suggest taking a deep breath, letting it out slowly, and just going with the flow with this story.

I hadn't noticed until I added this read to my Goodreads account, that this was such a short novella (Amazon listed it as 150pgs, while Goodreads lists it at 69pgs-- I'm inclined to go with Goodreads' estimate). I found this to be a strange read, and I was lost often with odd references. The writing is poetic in many instances, with some good emotional scenes, but I felt like I'd stepped into the middle of a story and had no context. The ending summed everything up nicely and pulled together the loose threads, but this is not my type of read.

Wow. This is the first thing I've read by Rabia Gale but not the last - what a talent! She's created an amazingly layered world which readers absorb in moments as the plot unfolds. Those moments are deliciously well balanced, giving the reader enough to keep reading yet tantalizing enough to keep you reading (gobbling!) the rest of the story.

Gale has written a unique and powerful vision of an almost steampunk-y world, yet one that supports supernatural entities (the Mourning Cloak of the title, for example); she's woven our physics and magical physics together into a perfectly workable whole. Her characters are fully formed individuals and, like this world, we get acquainted with them in moments of action throughout the work. The plot itself has a briskly inexorable pacing that takes us from the mundane (for this world) to the stunningly rewarding ending.

This is the precursor to her novel 'Ironhand' yet it stands alone as a brilliant novella by an enormously talented young writer. This novella is a must-read for fantasy readers.

Despite not being a huge fan of fantasy fiction, I found this novella hard to put down. I devoured it in one morning, I am still reeling from the vivid imagery, and am very curious about what happens to the characters in the next book. The characters and the whole story in general were quite unusual. I would give this five stars instead of four, but there was a small amount jumping around between the main characters' perspectives, and there wasn't always a clear delineation. I had to go back and reread a few paragraphs, which was frustrating when I was so immersed in Gale's imaginary world. All in all, very interesting and entertaining. A good read.

More than a science fiction/fantasy fusion packed with nonstop action, more than a deeply thematic tale of an apostate warrior and a priestess fallen from grace, this engrossing, mystical, wildly inventive novel takes on the deepest issues of faith and existence. Is there a God who answers prayer? And is it sometimes better if He doesn't? This book dazzled my imagination and lured me through the whole story with an intriguing trail of questions. I give it four stars because I only give five stars to the 10-ish books that have revolutionized my life :)

"Kato the weak. Destroyer of hope, deceiver of many." Kato was a hero, but what is he to become after his fall from grace? What does redemption look like for a good man whose best effort isn't good enough? Gale explores heroism, love, and betrayal while once again blending elements of science fiction and fantasy into a new configuration. One draw of fantastic fiction is the opportunity to explore new worlds and ways of living, and Mourning Cloak presents a startling and richly imagined world to puzzle through and explore. Gale uses her powerful imagination to set the stage for a gripping story: Kato and the Cloak will draw you in, encouraging you to keep turning pages not only to find out what will happen, but what has happened to bring them to this point. You may well find yourself demanding, when the tale is concluded, that Gale return to this world of mourning cloaks, cobble crunchers, golems, and gears to bring more of its mystery to light!
