Big Mouth

No I did not. I did not, I did not. I did not say those things, and I did not plan those things. Won't It anyone believe me?

Ugly Girl

All right, Ugly Girl made a mistake. I'd told my mom what I'd heard in the cafeteria, and she'd told Dad. Evidently. I'd thought for sure they would want me to speak up for the truth.

Matt has a big mouth and Ursula is considered an ugly girl who's strong, tall, and athletic. They're not friends and don't really have anything in common, but the two of them come together during a time of difficulty for Matt. Something he says gets taken out of context and threatens to ruin his life.

In an immature fashion Matt jokes about weapons and bombing the school. Most people can see he doesn't mean anything by it, except for a few people who are within earshot and report him. Matt is taken into police custody, questioned, and suspended from school. Ursula, who barely knows him, can't stand the injustice. She comes forward and tells the principal what she heard, insisting that he's innocent. Matt is allowed to go back to school, but people don't look at him the same again. He loses friends, loses his positions in clubs and extracurricular activities, and spirals down in depression. Ursula doesn't mean to at first, but she strikes a friendship with him. It's good to have someone like her by his side, because Matt is in for even more problems with a community, a student body, and parents who won't forget what happened.

This is an intense book that covers mass hysteria, bullying, and friendship. It's realistic and the two main characters come to life. The suspense and pacing are consistent, with the last quarter of the novel hardest to put down.

Subjectwise a timely book. But, the outstanding feature is the way people's lives change in ways you never imagine....cause and effect....and in the end how understanding and friendship can change the course of one's life. Brilliantly executed from the point of view of two teenagers.

Me Oates is one of my favorite authors. This is the first time I've ever given her only 3 stars. The topic is timely, for sure, but I just didn't "feel" the characters as I usually do with her books. They were more stereotypes than complex 3 dimensional people. I didn't quit reading but it didn't capture me like her novels normally do. Everyone has less than perfect efforts. This maybe more aimed at an older adolescent population.

In an era of post-Columbine hysteria, an innocent joke is turned into a circus of wild, irrational accusations and convoluted media commentary. Big Mouth & Ugly Girl are the two main characters of Joyce Carol Oates' novel, and the story is told through their observations, conversations and correspondence. It's both amusing and infuriating to see the plot unfold. You know where it's all going, and secondary characters are trotted out to move it all along. The bigots, phonies, dumb jocks, cowardly administrators and more are almost cardboard cut-outs propped up to decorate a stage.

There are no huge surprises in Big Mouth & Ugly girl, but it is a story well-told. It is certainly worth your time.

So important to read a book about rumors and gossip, the many ways low self-esteem can look, and the effects of actions makes many ripples. If you think you're making a stand about something, make sure it isn't hurting anyone. Is revenge ever a good idea? It could come back to hurt you even more. Not only is this story so appropriate for kids, but it is also so necessary to start a discussion about the characters, themes, symbols, metaphors, and the moral of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars JCO works her magic on teenage angst and trauma
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 6, 2015
I thought Big Mouth and Ugly Girl was great. JCO works her magic on teenage angst and trauma. The story moves back and forth between Ursula and Matt. This works really well and I liked getting both their perspectives on what was happening. This book is heartbreaking and incredibly moving at times. I was shocked by what happened to Matt and the events that take place afterwards. My heart went out to Matt and Ursula. I thought Ursula was a great character, someone who isn’t afraid to speak out when they feel an injustice has been done. I found Matt and Ursula’s blossoming relationship very sweet. JCO hit the nail on the head with every sentence.

I’d highly recommend Big Mouth and Ugly Girl.
