Editorial Reviews

2013 album from the San Francisco-based Heavy Rock band. Musically, Orchid owe their sound to the grand masters of Rock. They walk in the footsteps of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and even Pink Floyd - they certainly are generating abundant exhilaration wherever they roam. This musical genre, the mix of Blues, Folk and Hard Rock, was surely the most widespread bravura in the early '70s, and those legendary acts mentioned above would easily fill stadiums even today. Their timeless music has survived decades of trends and fashions.

In a just world, this is the heavy rock cd that everyone would have been salivating over. No disrespect to Tony, Geezer, and Ozzy, but Orchid hits all the sweet spots that those of us craving a Sabbath fix really need! This San Francisco band has released an absolutely stunning cd with 'The Mouths of Madness.' It gets the vibe of early Sabbath spot on, while not just sounding like a cover band. This is just an incredible hard rock record. I hate to keep name dropping Black Sabbath, but that's the obvious reference point. Seriously, give this to your uncle, your friends, anyone who likes the classics but complains "there's no good music today." Because you can say "NOT true..."

After being blown away by Capricorn, I had to get Mouths of Madness. It seems a little more up tempo and progressive. Guitar riffing and leads still top notch, killer bass, solid drumming. Theo Mindell delivers another strong vocal performance.9 songs,56 minutes in length. Production and sound quality A-1. Great mix of song styles, the Mouths of Madness, Silent One, Mountains of Steel, Leaving it All Behind, Wizard of War among my faves. Can listen to, start to finish. Kind of reminds me of Sabbaths 3rd,4th and 5th records. Everybody draws influence from somebody. Stones,Cream,Zeppelin and A LOT of others took from the great black blues masters. So please, take it easy on Sabbath rip off references. Be thankful there are newer bands that put out records in the style of great early 70s hard rock. Stoner/Doom rules, Rock On!

This is amazing and sounds more like vintage classic Sabbath than Sabbath themselves these days (13). The band is in top form, writes great songs, performs amazingly and has awesome album covers and songs. Yes they sound similar to Sabbath but all their own origional music is excellent and destroys any manufactured garbage of today, im loving the vintage, pure music revival.

Thank the Devil, there is a New wave of "old-school-CLASSIC-Rock" sounding Bands coming out! I ordered this Album after reading a review in "Classic Rock" Magazine on just "How they were described". And I am Very Pleased to tell ANYONE who is interested, that these guys have Not ONLY "The Sound" of The Glory-Days...but The Songs as well. Great writing with Cool song-titles, great Riffage that Iommi would be proud of ..(Master of Reality & Vol 4 era)..in style especially! In fact i couldn't help but chuckle happily as "THAT STYLE" kept comin' at me..he he. The only main difference being, instead of an "Ozzy" sounding Singer....he actually sounds quite a bit like Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P.! Great stuff Guys! Anyone who buys this album, looking for "That style"..Won't be disappointed. Long Live "THAT STYLE!" Crank 'em & enjoy!!

ORCHID-THE MOUTHS OF MADNESS: It does have a heavy BLACK SABBATH influence. BS the way I remember them: Master of Reality. Just when the cd gets less interesting another good song comes on. Id be willing to take a chance on this band again.

This new album is excellent! Their Capricorn album is one of my favorites but this new one has some really sweet melodies on it. They really stretched their scope of tones on this one. The bass just rolls , some awesome piano in here , organs , all kinds of great sounds for your ears! Your stereo will love you if you play this on it!

When I listen to this album, I am reminded of the fact that every new generation rediscovers Black Sabbath for the first time, and this often brings about the formation of bands that honor their greatness through faithful emulation. Such is the case here. Orchid does a fantastic job a paying homage to the Sabotage/Paranoid era while still achieving self identity in the process. I very much enjoy this album. It's both nostalgic and new all at once, and that is something I feel is difficult to achieve.

Easy on the ears and easy to recommend.
