From the Inside Flap
Too many new initiatives lose drive and direction before they finish. At the beginning, when a team first commits to implementing a new strategy, there is great energy and enthusiasm driven by the allure of the end goal. But then comes the long, dangerous part in "The Middle" where everything needs to get done, obstacles inevitably spring up, and people feel a strong temptation to revert to the old ways. MOVE explains how to keep your team focused, motivated, and resilient enough to push through the unavoidable, chronic challenges that derail most change initiatives.
Some of the most recognizable brands in the world use the MOVE methodology to ensure their change strategies don't stall. Business transformation expert Patty Azzarello explains the four components of a prosperous business transformation, and exactly what it takes to keep everyone moving the new strategy forward, including:
- The key elements in an execution plan that guarantee accountability and momentum
- Empowering tools for transforming the team you have into the team you need
- A powerful new way to think about leading and communicating, to genuinely engage people throughout the implementation
Your company has a lot riding on the strategic changes it needs to make. The MOVE model will help you make sure that everyone stays engaged, maintains momentum, and that your initiatives succeed.
From the Back Cover
Praise for MOVE
"Any organization that isn't adapting to the trends reshaping business today is going to find itself left behind by more nimble and forward-thinking competitors. You need this book, not to tell you what transformations you need to make, but to ensure the transformations you initiate actually work."
—Rich Sanzi, Vice President of Engineering, Google
"In any kind of transformation, keeping the energy high, and the skepticism low is critical to success—and difficult to do! Patty Azzarello has a unique way of understanding how to drive transformational change because she has done it herself, and guided many leaders and teams through the process. MOVE is a great read for any leader who wants to get and keep their organization invested in implementing a bold new strategy."
—Andy Burtis, SVP, Corporate Marketing & Communications, McKesson
"MOVE is a must read for any organization and leader that needs to make the transition from talking about high level goals to making faster decisions and putting specific, concrete actions into motion. It is the difference between activity and results. The MOVE model will allow you to get your whole organization engaged and focused on delivering the results of your strategic plan."
—Don Joos, CEO, ShoreTel Inc.
"One of the hardest things to make happen when you are driving a transformation is to get people to change their behaviors. In MOVE, Patty Azzarello explains exactly what makes people choose to embrace the new strategy or resist it. Any leader trying to motivate their organization to implement a new strategy needs to read this book."
—Iram Shah, Senior Vice President Customer Transformation, Schneider Electric

In that time I’ve had the personal fortune of working closely with principles at the very best-of-the-best at the now defunct Arthur Anderson, Bain Consulting, Boston Consulting Group, KPMG, McKinsey & Co and several more. If I had set out to write down my own pearls on business leadership, it would be pretty much what Patty has decided to freely share through her book. It is the best of all this collective wisdom - only better. She has personally tested and taught everything put forward here. If you were to go hire one of these prestigious - and very expensive firms - you would generally actually work with a well educated MBA or similarly degreed person steeped in one school of thought, one methodology. But not someone who has actually led a business outside of consulting.
MOVE transcends methodologies with the real and human deep wisdom, hard won and from one of very few people whose career has reached beyond into multiple, diverse industries and business challenges. There are many other useful management books that abound on business fundamentals, improvement methodologies, metric and measurements, etc… If those books are your toolbox, this book should be your new bible - where you go to check your approach and as a source of how to redefine problems, and most importantly as a source of personal confidence and hope. I have seen and put pretty much every principle in here into action, or in a few cases watched others put these principles into action. This is no ivory tower exercise; this is the real beef.
If you are just stepping out into your leadership career - well you are in luck, because you now have a field guide. Her ideas here are useful at every level of leadership; the broader your responsiblities, the more you can leverage here.
But what most sets my friend Patty Azzarello aside is her solid foundation of ethics and how to treat people. Our environment abounds with leaders at all levels who believe in kill or be killed. Who believe every contest is win/lose. There are better, and more successful ways to lead which at every turn give all concerned the opportunity to learn, grow, change and transform. That is a world I can believe in. This demands a better leader, and better ways of leading. You can’t do it alone. And Patty has given it here, on silver platter so to speak. The cost of the book is a token - the generosity behind it significant.
For those who are impressed by this book, her first book RISE continues to be tremendously helpful to a bastion of today’s best leaders, and I want to close this short review by also endorsing her as a consultant. There is a lot more market demand than there is available Patty, but if you are lucky enough you will find her among the top coaches and consultants to the best executives and just a great human being to help you change seemingly hopeless problems into challenges with great rewards to be earned through your own transformation.
You got an education to learn the frameworks, the tools and the methods. Read RISE to learn how to optimize your own career, and when you are ready to become a great leader read MOVE to learn how to really achieve accomplishment and results. Your people will love you for every parcel she offers here, which you in turn adapt into your own style of leadership.
MOVE is a practical playbook that contains many simple techniques that will propel your career and company into the stratosphere.
I received a free copy of MOVE prior to launch and still had no hesitation buying the Kindle version.
I read Patty's first book Rise, a few years ago and it is one of the best career advice books available.
Rise: 3 Practical Steps for Advancing Your Career, Standing Out as a Leader, and Liking Your Life
As a result of following the principles in Rise I went from middle management to CFO to COO and CEO (in different teams and companies).
I can't recommend this book enough -- easily in my top three of the 50+ books about business that I've read.
Patty is so generous in sharing her communication and execution best practices. Her tips are simple, logical and practical. Here is one example:
"The right measure of communication success is never about how clearly you think you have communicated. The only right measure is about how much your audience has internalized"
Now, before I communicate, I think about the actual message for my audiences, instead of what I try to say.
Great MOVE for you and your team if you sincerely want to become an effective executive and build a great team.
