I used the technique on myself to recover from a strained hamstring and I've used it with many patients with body and limb pain. Get back to your functional life.
This is one of the most useful approaches I have ever found to pain - and who knows what else, I haven't even been doing it that long! In one exercise, I noticed changes in my body and then the pain in my neck (that had been plaguing me for some time) disappeared.
What's confusing about it is how easy it is. Most of us are suspicious of something that's too easy. But it's only easy if you're willing to pay close attention to yourself while you make the smallest, most unchallenging movements. Seriously. It's hard to believe but it's really true. It's helping your body remember how to move properly and it only works if you're slow and gentle. Perfect for the lazy person.
I did find some of the syntax in the book confusing, but when I pushed through the early pages, got used to his style, and tried the exercises I was blown away. So no, the book isn't perfect, but the impact on your life can be enormous.
If you're interested in this you might also want to read Thomas Hanna. He's the founder of Somatics and he wrote a more conceptual book called Somatics: Reawakening The Mind's Control Of Movement, Flexibility, And Health. It's here on Amazon. You wont' find these wonderfully helpful exercises in Hanna's book, but you'll get a better sense of the whole approach and underlying philosophy.
Anyway, I'm continuing to follow Ed's instructions and thinking to myself, "Where has this been all my life?!"
For those who live in chronic pain, this is the system and the information you have needed for years. Every bodyworker, physical therapist, chiropractor, physiotherapist and physiatrist, should know this and put it in the hands of their patients and clients.
His book, his knowledge and his teachings are revolutionary. Any human being at any age can apply his moves and live happily ever after. I do, and at nearly 67, I still work out at the gym and do it without any muscle injury at all. If I pull a muscle a little too much or don't make a move just right and feel the muscle tightening up, I stop, make some "Ed Moves" and I'm back in the game, perfect.
A must read, a must have, a must apply book of knowledge, I can't say enough about how liberating this information is for the whole of your life. Pain free and moving easily with power, you can live a life you love.
