When two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs launched MoveOn.org in 1998, they had no idea that they would be hailed as powerful and influential political activists or grow their online advocacy group to 2 million members in just a few years. Their simple mission—fueled by passion for a more open and democratic nation, topnotch and timely information, and the financial support of concerned individuals and organizations—was to jumpstart broad civic dialogue and enable ordinary citizens to effectively voice their political concerns.

In the spirit of simplicity and empowering the citizen, this book is an essential "how to" for becoming politically informed and involved. In this handbook for change, MoveOn members from around the country have written about what it means to be a responsible member of a democracy—what they have done in the past and what they are now doing to help make the United States more accountable, forward thinking, and a better place to live.

The 50 Ways range from simple ideas, such as "Tell a Friend about a Petition" to more dynamic suggestions, such as "Organize a Constituent Meeting," and the editors at MoveOn provided action items and resources for those who want to take inspiration a step further.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's somewhat rare to see an entire grassroots political organization listed as the author of a book but it's perfectly in keeping with the spirit of both MoveOn.org and this handbook on civic activism authored by some of the group's members. It features 50 short chapters (one or two pages each in most cases) authored by non-celebrities from all walks of life who took it upon themselves to change the world. Some of the ideas are ambitious, as in the case of a liberal-minded Texan who decided the best way to make his views known was to run against Republican stalwart Tom DeLay in the GOP primary. Others are much simpler: write a letter to the editor, sign a petition, or go to a rally. But even in those seemingly obvious tactics, there are interesting techniques offered that could make a simple act a much more effective one. Included in each tip are bullet-pointed tips from MoveOn organizers to help the reader translate the idea into real action. While MoveOn is certainly not the first group to suggest simple steps to change the world, this volume scores points for it's concise editing and populist authorship. It's not a book to curl up with in front of the fire, it's meant to be thrown into a backpack or purse on the way to the next protest, campaign rally, or discussion group. The slant, like the organization itself, is a liberal one but the writers generally stop short of expanding on their political beliefs, choosing instead to focus on what those beliefs inspired them to do with their time and energy. Brief interstitial essays by notables such as Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi introduce sections of the book, providing expert gravity without detracting from the common person message. --John Moe

Review

"[MoveOn.org is the] hottest political organization in American progressive circles."

This is an excellent book, whether you lean on the conservative or liberal end. While the examples on it do lean towards the democratic ends of things, the ideas can be applied for just about anything politically. I highly recomend this book if you are wondering what you can do in 2004 to get the candidate you support to be elected. I will be keeping around my copy of this book, and I'm going to be using many of the ideas in this book to help the candidates I support to be elected, all the way from the state congressional level, to the presidental race. The introductions by Al Gore, and other high profile Democratic politicians are excellent, and adds to the book. I first learned about this book in an email from MoveOn.org, and I knew just then after reading some of the reviews here, that I had to get it. I loved it! I highly recomend this to anyone who is looking for ideas to be politically active. This book can help anyone who wants to be politically active in 2004, and is willing to give it thier time.

Despite what some of the reactionary right-wing "reviews" indicate, this book is NOT filled with radical and nefarious plans to undermine society. It is filled with simple, honest ways to get involved in the political process, like writing your congressman, talking to your neighbors, volunteering for a candidate, encouraging people to vote -- the stuff that REALLY scares right-wingers.
The right-wing hate machine wants to keep citizens OUT of the process so they can be free to further plunder the US treasury, drain YOUR social security funds, and promote worldwide hegemony, all in the name of "fighting terror."
This book is about doing your small part to counteract the "dirty tricks" of the RNC with the one thing they can't stand: truthful discussion and honest campaigning. But on the other hand, this book is completely non-partisan, in that every technique and idea could apply to any political party or cause you care to support. It's about restoring democracy in America, period.
For the record, I bought this book and have read numerous selections from it, unlike many of the kneejerk negative "reviews" on here posted before the book was even available.

As a conservative, I was skeptical -- to say the least -- about a book on "Democracy" from MoveOn.org.
While I may not agree with the politics of most of the authors, I have to say that reading the individual stories was eye opening to me in the sense of seeing what a difference one person can make in our gridlocked political arena.
I'm so sick of our American government and politics being deadened and directed by extreme, cynical career elites and marketers of both parties. This book offers a rare contemporary glimpse of genuine hope in America for re-establishing our democracy "for the people" -- regardless of what party you belong to.
The stories are also very concrete, factual, and short -- so you can learn a lot.

Read straight through or pick and choose topics (eg re voting, online activism, the media, and more) - either way, it is fun to read and full of ideas. They say they wanted to use 100, but finally focused on the 50 personal stories chosen from over 2,500, and I am sure that was a challenge.
It was fascinating to read the distilled experience of the 50 people whose stories are here - more than once they were the stories behind campaigns and actions that I have heard of and appreciated but had not known how they got started.
If you like the positive message about how "one person can make a difference" you will love this book. Also if you love the Margaret Mead quote about a small committed group changing the world, that could fit too!
As for me, I am going to buy multiple copies for my son and all his graduating senior friends.
Fifty ways to love your country - a good positive and practical message for anyone from kids up to the most senior among us.

...It's moveon.org, what did you expect? Anyway, too many people are rating this book on their personal political convictions rather than the book itself, which leads me to suspect whether some of the reviewers read it at all. Personally, I don't understand how people with right-wing philosophies refuse to accept all the deceipt going on in Washington simply because our great leader holds the same republican principles. But so fuels the bipartisan system that has served our country well, I suppose.
But for the concerned citizen... since it's pretty hard to take direct action on the federal government (as some reviewers also are suggesting?), this is an excellent handbook on how to make your disappointment in the current U.S. government heard (or any democracy for that matter, although we seem to be pretty much the only ones with problems right now). So if you're blood-thirsty and/or closed-minded, for god sakes don't buy the book. But if you're frustrated with the state of our nation and wish to be a part of the change that can restore the much of the world's respect and admiration of the U.S.A., then this book is for you.
True, at times it does lean a little too far in left field (giving serious forward thinkers a silly hippie label), but for it's compact and concise advice to being a concerned yet active citizen, I give it 4 stars.

After years of having right wing bullies kick sand in their eyes, Liberals are madder than hell and aren't going to take it any more. They have finally developed the backbone to kick back and give as good as they get.
The moderate liberal Move On has been one of the main forces empowering then and giving them the means to counteract the entrenched power of the right wing establishment. The success of this book will further increase the influence of this patriotic organization fighting to free the country from the harm done it by the power of the right wing's control of the government and the media.
That's why Move On has the right wingers in a tizzy.
