There are so many great lessons woven in with stories of adventure

We are absolutely loving this book. We are reading it aloud as a family. My husband, myself and 3 teenage boys. There are so many great lessons woven in with stories of adventure, success, failures, and how he gained knowledge through each different twist and turn his life took. We have several people in line to borrow this book after we are finished.
I love how he admits his failures and mistakes, but then shows how it taught him a great life lesson. He also shares his thought processes and my boys have been able to identify with some of the feelings he expressed at the different ages of his life. They learn how he took a path and realized it wasn't the right way. They are things that many young men face as they grow up. I can see that it is helping my boys learn from his mistakes so they don't have to make the same mistakes.
It also is a great way to learn about history in the early 1900's because you see how differently they handled things like child labor, safety (or lack thereof) in the workplace, work lines for so many unemployed men who were all competing for one job. You see how one little bit of knowledge set him above the others and he got the job that so many others wanted. It's showing my boys how to seek for knowledge and continue learning so you will have the edge. Also, lessons of the rewards achieved from hard work and the doors it opens up.
We are only part way in to the book and have already gained so much. Can't wait for the rest....

What an amazing person!

This book was recommended at a family gathering! I love reading about people with determination who do amazing things despite many obstacles. This was all that and so much more! Once he achieved success, he never stopped imagining what his inventions could do to improve the lives of others. Although some of the information was technical, I understood what I needed and skimmed some of the details. Just when I was thinking he had achieved success, and wondering how the book could only be half finished, his ideas and achievements expanded beyond imagination. This book was easy to read. Don't let the technical parts keep you from reading. And if you like big machines, you might love those details!

An inspirational autobiography written with humor

Many years ago I worked for LeTourneau manufacturing as an international representative.(although after R G's death). I was given a copy of this book then but I wanted a replacement since the original was damaged.

This is an extremely inspiring autobiography of a man who became extremely successful even though he had very limited formal education. He tells of the hardships, hard work from the lowest jobs and his breakthrough "light bulb" inspirational moments. He tells of being a road and dam contractor when he came to believe that a 1000 men with wheelbarrows was inefficient so he constructed larger and larger machines to improve efficiency. A favorite quote was "The job is not too big, only the machines are too small". The book has pictures of his machines, factories, and other accomplishments. It is written with a bit of humor (often self deprecating)

R G (as he was known by friends and many of the people who had worked with him) was a very religious man. He provided an hour of interdenominational service for his employees to attend during work hours if they desired. He loved planes and owned several during his life. He was a driving force in the construction of the Longview, TX airport which has one of the longest runways for any smaller airport. It was used once when the plane transporting the space shuttle from coast to coast required maintenance. R G is well remembered for charity and establishing the LeTourneau University.

great book for anyone. Amazing story

This is a very interesting book, whether you are interested from the viewpoint of his life and the way he accomplished things, or from the history of how large equipment developed. This man had an amazing ability to innovate. If you look at the bulldozer, the telescoping crane, any of the large machines that are used in construction, LeTourneau created them. Yet he quit school when he was 13, and started working in the iron industry. His business smarts were amazing. Was it easy for him? no, he went bankrupt at least once. But he persevered, treated his employees right, and had an amazing way of looking at life. He was a Christian, but he did not sit back, and ask God to do things for him. This is an extraordinary story, and i find him to be very unique. He became a motivational speaker, yet continued to work in the earth moving industry, constantly innovating. He became quite wealthy , but still worked to use his wealth in other areas. In one life span, he built communities , from scratch, in South America, and in africa. He built a hospital, a major university, and innovated many engineering projects. This book does not read like a dry account of "Next i did this...." It is a fast, and interesting read, whether you share his Christian beliefs or not. I highly recommend this book for anyone. This man has been mostly forgotten, but he is as relevant today, as the story of steve jobs.
