Growing up as a child in the '50's & '60's I was already very familiar with these films, but only in B&W as that's all we had at the time, so I was very interested in this "Four Pack" as offered by Amazon. The video quality was extremely good compared to the last time I I'd seen these films, so I have to complement whoever did these transfers over to DVD. The sound quality is very listenable, but don't expect any of the fancy stuff produced by today's standards. I believe Wake Island was produced even before we had "stereo", but what you DO hear is clear dialog from the actors. Special effects are to be expected from the time period. Wake Island is probably the most "cheesy" of these films and Gray Lady Down the most intense. Combat scenes are super mild compared to today's standards, but back then I don't think the folks back home really wanted to see what could happen to their loved ones in combat. Being a former Marine and having met two survivors of Wake Island I can remember their personal stories about Wake, the Alamo of the Pacific. Courage is an understatement. And Gray Lady Down makes me so glad I never had to serve aboard a submarine. It was truly a different time with a different mindset. These films do help depict the courage that was required of our military during a horrible time period. If you're into the older, classic WWII movies then I think you'll enjoy this set. I did.

The only complaint I have about this collection is that Gray Lady Down isn't really a war movie. It's more of a rescue movie, where the sub is stuck under water, and people try to rescue them. It doesn't take place in wartime, and no guns are fired. The other three movies are okay. The Rock Hudson movie is a Korean War movie. And I think Wake Island was filmed before even WWII ended, so it's a movie about a war that was still being fought when filmed, but I don't know if any real war action was included. Hell And Back stars a real-life soldier playing himself as the title role, at least that's what it's introduced as and I assume they are honest.

A great collection of war stories but I have to single out "To Hell and Back" which I first saw in cinemas in the 50s. Audie Murphy became my instant hero and I followed his career with great interest. What a brave, brilliant American. His wartime heroics are beautifully screened with a combination of exciting action scenes and the moving relationships the soldiers developed in horrific circumstances. This is one of my all time favourite movies. Audie Murphy was taken from us too soon and I remember how devastated I was at his passing.

The other movies in the collection are enjoyable with "Gray Lady Down" being my second best choice from the four. All in all this collection is real value for money.

"Four-Movie Marathon: Classic War Collection"
(Universal Studios, 2011)
-----------------------------------------------------
A two-disc, four-movie collection of top-quality Grade-B war movies, where war is heck and the guys are all swell. This is the kind of stuff they used to show on afternoon TV back when I was a kid, full of corny dialog and American ideals. The colelction includes:

"Wake Island" (1942)
A real-deal wartime propaganda film, released in 1942, just months after Pearl Harbor and the defeat of a USMC garrison on Wake Island, just west of Hawaii. In December, 1941 the Marines held the atoll for two weeks against a ferocious Japanese assault, a story that is told here in classic idealized Hollywood style: the Americans are regular guys and big lugs who love pretty dames and puppy dogs and can gun down enemy soldiers by the truckload. The movie ends abruptly, on a sad note, with all the heroes being overrun by Japanese soldiers and killed within minutes. (In real life, most of the Marines were captured as POWs...) Hollywood does its best to put a positive spin on things, playing the Marines up as martyrs and exhorting the nation to keep fighting. Lots of aerial dogfight scenes, blown-up model ships and plenty of explosions on the ground. An oldie and a goodie.

"To Hell and Back" (1955)
The Audie Murphy story, told with WWII hero Murphy himself starring in the lead. This Technicolor film is a little clunky; an attempt to revive American's enthusiasm for military readiness in the wake of the demoralizing, unpopular Korean War. Murphy makes the transition from a nervous, green farmboy to a fearless fighting machine.

"Battle Hymn" (1957)
Rock Hudson stars in this colorful, sentimental exercise in Korean War revisionism, in which a retired pilot re-enlists to fight the Reds. The war was very unpopular at the time, and only later became shown as the same kind of "old school" heroic war as WWII.

"Gray Lady Down" (1978)
David Carradine, Charleton Heston and Stacy Keach star in this late-date submarine film - seems a little out of place with the other three, older-vintage films, but still kinda fun.

I got this collection because I wanted Grey Lady Down, a submarine suspense story with Charlton Heston, David Caradine and Stacey Keach. Wake Island is a classic and can be found singly if desired, but adds to the value of this DVD- several old stars are featured like Brian Donlevy, MacDonald Carey, Robert Preston and William Bendix (and even a doggie subplot). To Hell and Back features Audie Murphy, the most decorated man of the time, at a very young age. I appreciate what he did but this story telling leaves a lot to be desired. Battle Hymn has Rock Hudson as an Air Force commander in a faith crisis. All the films are clear prints with reliable sound quality. All have English Subtitles available for the hearing impaired.

"To Hell and Back" is Audie Murphy's true story. After being turned down by the marines, then the navy, Audie's sister helped forge a birth certificate and Audie got into the army. He was a born leader though he himself didn't think so. During WWII he won every medal our military has, plus medals from France and Belgium.
"Battle Hymn" is the story of a man who wrestled with his conscience, overcame his doubts, and helped save a large group of orphans in battle weary Korea. A very, very good story.
"Grey Lady Down" is the story of an inventor who has a sort of minisub. With it, he saved many lives. In fact, he gave his own life to save others. A good film starring david Carradine as the inventor.
