About the Author

S. Tyson Gardner works for Fairmount Park in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A guide for Laurel Hill Mansion, one of the historic 18th-Century summer villas in the city's sprawling 4,000 acre Fairmount Park, he also lectures on park related history and is involved with the America Institute of Architects and Preservation Alliance architectural tours. Reared and educated in Atlanta, Georgia, the cultural switch to what he now regards as his adopted northern home informs his mid-life move to Belize as something even more out-of-character and challenging for a wayward Southerner.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. The author has a very strange writing style that is hard to describe. This writing style is so strange it does more than detract from the story - you can't actually FIND the story - and it certainly isn't being told to you.

I have been reading everything I can to help prepare for moving to Belize. Despite the bad reviews I thought there still might be something to glean from this book. I was wrong. The author is very verbose but has very little to say. I was unable to relate to him or his viewpoint and struggled to read the whole book. The writer doesn't have much common sense, and isn't very masculine or handy, so it is painful to read his recounting of his experiences. I suffer from insomnia but think I have finally found the cure.

Moving To Belize...helpful insight from an author whose style of writing makes you want to read more and more about what can and does happen when one moves to Belize. If you think the adjustment from Philadelphia living to sub tropical living is a mere change of temperature, you're in for an huge enlightening. A simple task as driving down the road turns into a carnival ride. Its all about change and the adapting to a new world that's so entertaining about this book. Goodbye pigeons, hello colorful tropical birds. Give it a try and who knows, you might just be the next expat living in Belize.

Not the worst book I have ever read about Belize, but very close. Many Americans go to Belize and learn nothing - and lately there have been a spate of books by people who have spent a few months living by the beach or in town, who then feel qualified to pass judgement on the lazy ways and inefficiencies they see around them. They like to hang around in bars with each other, complaining about the locals. This particular book is really about the author, not about Belize at all, and the author clearly feels like he is a fascinating fellow. The writing is pompous and convoluted, which would be forgivable if it were not quite so boring and self-involved.
