"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Question: John, why did you write this book?
Phillips: I've met so-many great people through doingthe Hometown Heroes section on the UroMed website (uromed.com/blog/), through LASCI -Life After Spinal Cord Injury (facebook.com/LASCIonline),through Bert Burns and Lisa Wells, that I wanted to share some of thesepeople's stories with you. Often in our day-to-day lives, we think that lifecan't get any worse. We also sometimes think, "Poor me," and, "Why did Godallow this to happen to me?" In each one of these stories, these individualsprove that you not only can get through the hard licks that life throws at you,but you can overcome them and be better for them. One person told me, "Ifyou're a sorry, good-for-nothing person before an accident or an illness, you'll be worse after you've faced that tragedy. But if you were a happy, driven person who refuses to give up, the tragedy often makes you better thanyou ever could have been."

Question: Why did you select these people forthis book?
Phillips: Each of these individuals has a very-uniqueand unusual story, and they demonstrate what true courage is. Oftentimes, ourpicture of courage is a combat soldier carrying a wounded comrade through ahail of bullet fire and exploding bombs. Yes, that's raw courage. But often wewalk past individuals in wheelchairs and never realize that we walk in thepresence of giants who have outstanding courage, intestinal fortitude and apersonality that says, "I will win against all odds." I admire courage, whetherit's the soldier in battle or the man or woman who has had to fight theirillness or disability, but also society and being accepted by their peers.

Question: What do you want us to get out ofthis book?
Phillips: I hope that you'll draw the same strengthfrom these individuals' lives that I have - that no matter how bad times mayget, how difficult your problems may seem, how much tragedy you have to face,or how little you have to work with - you can endure and overcome. My dad usedto always tell me, "Son, be the best you can be, regardless of yourcircumstances." I think each of the individuals in this book has accomplishedthis goal and is continuing to be the best they can be.
