Gracie Pickett followed her dreams of being a physician all the way to Rattlesnake Ridge. Learning the trade was the easy part, however. Convincing the small pioneer town that she’s up to the job is the tough part, especially when a rude, arrogant, oh-so-handsome widower and his three adorable boys seem to make it their mission to make her new life far more difficult than she ever anticipated.
Barrett Wright is busy managing his understaffed ranch while also hoping to find a wife to tend to his rambunctious sons. When the town council tasks him with finding a new doctor, he finds the perfect man for the job–until he learns the new doctor is a woman! Barrett is determined to see Gracie replaced with someone more suitable, if only he can tear his eyes away from her long enough to get the job done.
Gracie has no intention of giving up her new practice. When an accident puts her medical skills to the test, will she be able to prove to her biggest rival that she’s the right person for the job… and his heart?

Add to turn on the century. What she had to go through to get a job
Then what she had to go through to get people to trust her.
It is 1871, Gracie Rose Pickett is a recent honors graduate from Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. She struggles to find an employer willing to accept a female doctor for their medical clinic.
Barrett Wright is a local cattle rancher in Rattlesnake Ridge, Neveda. He is a widower with three young sons.
Between the mischievousness of Barrett Wright's three young sons and the sparring between Barrett and Gracie there is never a dull minute.
For example, this exchange between Barrett and Gracie after he discovers she is the G.R. Pickett he recommended the town council hire as the new doctor.
"...Don't get too comfortable, lady. You don't have what it takes to survive out here."
"Watch me," she countered.
My favorite part of the book is when Gracie is "frogging" with Barrett's sons and other local children at the creek located on Barrett Wright's property.
I recommend this book to historical fiction fans. This is the first book I have read by Christine Sterling. I will definitely look for more of her books to read.
I was given an ARC copy of this book for free. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
